They referenced the President. That happens to be Obama, but could have been anyone & the script would have been the same. And unless you're a major Washington insider, all you really know about anyone in politics is what the media tells you. We the audience know what's right & wrong but it wouldn't be that clear if this were reality. A reality involving huge transforming robots armed with frierce & deadly weapons. I suggest you move beyond this point.
Of course, in the first film, it was never explicitly shown that "The President" was Bush, but it was definitely implied by his goofiness and voice, and asking for "Hohos". This film did mention him by name though, and here's Bay's reasoning for the name-drop (I still think Bay's partially retarded): 'Transformers'' Michael Bay: Even Obama calls him a 'big-ass' director |

Autobots were always that. Cars. They didn't need to be tanks & planes. The 1st Autobots were cars & that's how they should stay.
The "prehistoric cat" was Ravage, and I'm glad he didn't turn into anything from Beast Wars or any of those other Transformers stuff. And thank GOD this movie wasn't more Family/kid friendly!! We have enough of that crap everywhere we turn. For those of us without kids, the world is kid-friendly enough without ruining it for everybody else!! |

This film is based off a toyline geared to 2-10 year olds. Whether it's from 1984 or 2009, that doesn't matter because the toyline and cartoon has been running for the majority of that time, still geared at their target audience: children. Simultaneously with the film, there's a cartoon running RIGHT NOW called "Transformers: Animated" that has drawn quite a bit of children into it. Just because there are adults who can't grow up and realize that these movies ARE for kids, honestly, is not a reason to have to include the humor. Would the film have been the same without the crass humor? No, it would have been better in my eyes. Because the crass, nonsensical humor (and to me, quite unfunny "humor"... not because I don't appreciate vulgar humor... I do. When it's funny. This was over-acting and was painful to watch, like a comedian floundering on stage) had nothing to do with the goal of the film: big fighting robots. Did Indiana Jones films, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, Dark Knight, X-Men 2 and so on, have ANY sort of crass humor like this film? Not one bit, and they were thoroughly enjoyable action films by dorks and kids alike. Just because adults can enjoy a film and need to be drawn to see it for it to make money doesn't mean that it should be reduced to panty shots and ball jokes. How immature is Michael Bay, and how removed from reality is he that he would think those gags would be appropriate for children? |

There WAS a cartoon running called Transformers: Animated. they pulled the plug after the 3rd season. Hell they even stop showing re-runs of the program.

You were never much of a fan and you hate the movie, surprise, surprise. I guess your still not much of a fan, and I don't think that someone who has never liked Transformers is the right person to ask for an unbiased opinion. That's like me saying " I never liked Mexican food, now here is my opinion of this new Mexican restaurant that just opened.
Incidently, I'm pretty sure the teenagers in the theatre weren't Transformers fans in the '80s, either. They seemed to enjoy the movie just fine. But I guess they're not qualified to judge the movie because they weren't fans 25 years ago?

You're exactly right. I've been saying this about ROC for the last year. G.I. Joe and Transformers have a lot of self-styled fans who don't want them to ever be anything more than moronic Saturday morning cartoons. They have no vision.

The flick is disposable entertainment; a popcorn movie if there ever was one. Which is fine, if that's what you want to create and put out there for the world to enjoy in its moment of release. I would like more, however.
The Transformers has a rich 25 year history of characters, battles, and interactions. Virtually none of this is incorporated into this movie or its predecessor. Rather than getting nuanced interactions between millenia-old sentient robots, we merely get skin-deep development of the human characters. Why explore the history and hierarchy of the Autobots when we can have jokes about bodily functions and private parts? Classy. I don't take issue with disposable movies; ones you watch, enjoy for the couple hours you're there, and then just as easily forget. Escapist entertainment pandering to the lowest common denominator can be quite enjoyable. I just don't see a franchise as being of that ilk. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, the Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies made prior to 1990 all are incredibly fun movies that stand up to repeat viewings and are both character driven and special-effects laden. Maybe that's the difficulty here. It's easy to use the giant robots as set pieces and cannon fodder, while concentrating on the human characters if you don't know the history inside and out. Whereas if you really know the characters and history of the Transformers, one can see what fully realized and fleshed out characters already exist and can be pulled into a new, exciting story. Develop these characters and you'll also get the human perspective. The Transformers themselves are full of love, loyalty, hate, betrayal, hunger for power, empathy, anger, humor, doubt, etc. The viewer can recognize parts of him or herself in the characters and create that connection needed for a believable story if the "special effects" have the solid script and direction needed. Recognize this and one could possibly create a movie that people will enjoy watching again and again even thirty years in the future. Not one that's good for two hours and ultimately forgotten. |
