Hey guys, please be aware that Shout Factory is going to charge your debit cards if you pre-order the DVD Series Sets of GI JOE and Transformers. I checked there entire site before pre-ordering and even saw some of the confirmation emails that others were getting before I ordered and thought I would be okay. Now I am having major problems. The following is an email I sent to Shout that set out my problem:
"The following is an exerpt from a letter I sent to my bank. I believe it will clarify my issue: On June 15th, 2009 I placed a “pre-order” for items on Shout! Factory - Music, Movies and Video for the discerning Pop Culture Geek using my debit card. This website indicated that I would not be billed until the items actually shipped, which is to be in July (please see the attached print out of Shout Factory’s customer service page). I also received an e-mail confirmation indicating that my card would not be charged until the items shipped (see the attached e-mail). However, I was shocked to learn that Shout Factory did bill my account immediately. This resulted in my account being overdrawn and over $200.00 (thus far) in overdraft charges on my account. I contacted the “800” number for Commerce and explained the situation. I explained that the company indicated I would not be charged till July. I was told that they had charged the account and I would need to contact them. I then contacted Shout Factory who told me that they had only “pre-authorized” the account (which their website didn’t indicate they would do) but did not take out any funds. They told me it was an issue with my bank. I have since been told that this "pre-authorization" will come off of my account this evening. However, the damage has been done and have incured over $200 in overdraft charges (possibly more by this evening). This is the first time I have used your company and it has turned out to be a huge mess. I had hoped to be a longtime customer as your company has secured licenses for many properties that I enjoy. However, if this situation is not resloved I could not possible see using your company again, nor recommeding you to others. Thus far it seems that Shout Factory is blaming my bank, and my bank is blaming Shout Factory. I am the customer, I don't feel like Ive done anything wrong, yet Im the one suffering. Furthermore, neither my bank or your company (thus far) seems to care about retaining me as a customer. Also, please note, that twice on your customers service page it states that cards wont be charged till the items ship. I also had seen other confimation email from others on on-line communities which indicated that cards would not be charged until shipped. I understand that your companies definition of "charged" may be different than that of a bank. However, that is semantics. Your definition of charged is not clear to the average consumer who uses your website. I sincerely hope you can help make this right. I truely do wish to be a long-time customer." So, be cautious when ordering please. GI JOHN |

I hardly think its the banks fault. Not everyone who has been charge banks at the same institution.

I had that happen to me when I ordered at Smalljoes one time. Is this an issue with Commerce/TD Bank, or are other people having this problem?

No. the trick is live within your means. I understand that you were trying to reserve your copy via pre order and was hoping to have money on the card by july. But $200 in overdraft fees?? That means you had to have damn near nothing on that card to begin with. If you have any # lower than $500 on a debit, you can't afford it. Watch Suze Orman brother. I'll wait to pick up that set later when it is much cheaper.
I noticed when I went to the Shout Factory site, the default order number was 2. Why would I want 2? That's when I ran away. |

places will generally put a charge on your account (especially a debit account) when you pre-order something to make sure you have the funds. The charge is reversed usually within the first 12 hours of it showing up on your account.
You shouldn't be responsible for the $200+ in overdraft charges though, as the company specified that your card will not be billed ,several times. A few hours sitting on the phone with the bank should take care of this. |

Actually, you shouldn't jump to conclusions here. My chequing account has next to nothing in it because I have a high interest savings account. I will transfer just what I need from my savings to my chequing account to maximize my interest earned. If they say I won't be charged till July, then I will wait till end of June before I transfer the money from my savings to my chequing account.
Exactly bro exactly

Have you not seen the signs at various hotels and other establishments suggesting not to use debit cards because of these "pre-authorizations" and "holds" that are put on debit card transactions?
