I was watching the He-Man episode. They were talking about how they had this darker, Frazetta-styled He-Man and then the cartoon made it goofy and lighthearted... And I was thinking, "Hmmm... That sounds familiar."
And if anyone is interested, check out 'Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films.' Cannon was the production company that made all those schlocky eighties B-action movies (American Ninja, The Delta Force, American Delta Ninja Force, etc). They were kind of the 'Asylum' of their day. By the end, they were actually making bigger budget (but still terrible) movies like 'Superman IV' and 'Masters of the Universe.' It's actually a rather interesting story and I liked the documentary. They actually ran out of money halfway through 'MOTU' and when the film failed it was the nail in the coffin. Admittedly, both the Joe and Star Wars episodes had moments that smelled like onions...

The He-Man ep just makes me wish that GI Joe would get a similar treatment with high end larger scale toys. I know the fandom is all about the 3 3/4" figs, but its not selling. Focusing on the big toy collectors and nostalgia nerds, I would love some high end quality GI Joe figures.
I mean Sideshow Collectibles kinda was giving us this, but sadly stopped :( |

Watched the Star Wars, He-Man, and GIJoe episodes ... great stuff! Love hearing about the toy origins and development war stories.

I have yet to watch the other episodes but the Joe one was awesome. The talk about the Flagg was spot on. I remember hearing about such a thing and just wishing to just see one. Then my dad brought one home from a swap meet. It was about 85% complete containing all of the most important pieces. And I love how Joe holds the title for most collected toy.

I watched all four episodes this past weekend. I enjoyed each episode. I knew a lot of the info on the Star wars show. It was interesting to see them describing getting burned on Episode One product. The Barbie episode was interesting because I never knew the real inspiration for the doll which was surprising. The He-Man episode was fun to watch. I knew little to nothing about the development of the line. The GI JOe episode was cool. It was fascinating to learn about how the ARAH line was developed. I felt that they could have done two episodes for GI JOE. One episode for the 60s/70s Joe and one for the ARAH and beyond GI JOE. But overall I liked the series. I hope that they cover more toy lines. I'd like to hear about Transformers and TMNT.

I watched all 3 episodes aftwr coming back from New Year's eve party at 7 am. Really good stuff. Nice to see how passionate those people that gave us the toys were. Scary to see how touch and go and accidental some of those great toys were!

Hearing all the gripes, bellyaching and complaints over Barbie's body shape over the years, it was interesting to learn why she was shaped that way. It wasn't meant to be a body shape to mimic, only to show off the clothing line in a more proportional fashion.
And for some reason I had no idea the lady that created Barbie and Ken had children named Barbara and Ken, lol... They are currently working on Transformers, they said they have no plans for TMNT at this time.

There is a story on the bonus disk, when Filmation was showing the pitch for the cartoon to networks at an annual platform for network to choose their line ups. A large man stopped at the He Man display and was visibly upset at the obvious rip off of Conan. Lou Scheimer, head of Filmation, asked around as to who “that guy was”. Well apparently ” that guy “ was Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is the link to that specific dvd set, Maybe you can find the bonus footage on YouTube. https://www.amazon.com/Masters-Unive...se+dvd+box+set The Shout Factory Joe and Transformers box sets also have some great bonus footage along the same line as the Netflix series as well.

I loved the series overall. Lots of good info presented well...largely but not completely “warts and all.” Two things stood out:
Masters of the Universe Classics was COMPLETELY ignored. Not even a mention of what ended up being a huge line in terms of number of characters. It was weird how this made it seem like Mattel was almost ashamed of the line or something. Super 7’s barely-started rereleases get a mention but not the line that lasted for years beforehand? The Joe episode just kind of fizzled out at the end. The other lines all got a bit of “and on we go into the 21st century but Joe basically skipped everything after Extreme. No nu-sculpt era, no 25th, no movies and beyond. It made it painful and awkward to watch in the last few minutes...but strangely appropriate all told, given the current state of Joe. But yeah, they were clearly struggling for some kind of concluding statement at the end there. |
