I decided to go ahead and start a thread about this. I'm a very big "Lord of the Rings" fanboy, both of the books and the films. I'll be eagerly anticipating this.
IMDB.com reports that Ian McKellen (which was already confirmed, I think), Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving have signed to reprise their roles from the original trilogy (Gandalf, Gollum and Elrond, respectively). Supposedly the next casting announcement will be for Bilbo. I'm really looking forward to what they do with Smaug. |

I too, am a big Rings fan. I cannot wait for this. With del Toro (and I do beileve Peter Jackson is involved in it as well), I think this movie (s) will be great.
Smaug is gonna rule!

I wish they'd go with Ian Holm and preserve the continuity between actors.
Either way, I'm sure this will be an awesome set of films. |

I would like to see Ian Holm as well, but the guy is almost 80! Where 10 years ago he passed it off well, it may be a bit of a stretch now without a ton of makeup/CGI.
But Del Toro and Jackson working together - this should be awesome |

I can't wait to see Laketown and Smaug.
Ian Holm would be nice, but too old.

I also really hope that Holm plays Bilbo, his health permitting.
And I think it'd be great if Ron Perlman plays both Bard and Smaug. |

I'd love to see Holm at least in some sort of cameo, health permitting. He's getting up there.

I'm looking forward to The Hobbit as well, i read that Peter Jackson will be producing this film. I think that i also read that Ron Pearlman will be starring in it in some way. It would be cool to see Ian Holm at the beginning starting to tell the story of his adventure. It going to be made into two films, so that they can put as much of the book as possibly.

That's not a bad idea! They could set it during his last trip to Rivendell (movie-wise) when he had just finished his part of the red book. Then he could look as old as they wanted him to.
