That's awesome. I did the same thing with D&D and Clash of the Titans figures. Perseus was Aragorn and Thallo was Boromir. I remember seeing the Lord of the Rings figures in the store when I was a kid and asking my parents for them. Assuming they'd be around for awhile they said "we'll get them next time." And we never saw them again. I never let them live it down.

He hasn't aged in the years since Gandalf last saw him, which is unlikely to be since the adventures chronicle in The Hobbit.
Note I did not say he has to look sixty years younger, but rather that Bilbo IS, indeed, 60 years younger in The Hobbit. He is fifty-one in that book, one-hundred and eleven (eleventyone) in Fellowship. Now, sixty years to a Hobbit is different than sixty to a human (we come of age at 18-21, Hobbits at 33) but still, Bilbo will have to be significantly younger. As to your second point, if you weren't implying that he has to look 60 years younger, I'm not sure what the reason for bringing it up was. That definitely seemed to be your point, but I'll admit I may have interpreted it incorrectly. Either way, I still think Ian Holm can be included via steve2477's suggestion earlier. |

This may be me, but I'm not really sure what you're saying in your first sentence. I guess (if I'm inferring correctly) if Ian Holm hasn't markebly aged much since filming LOTR, he should still be able to pull off the visual of Bilbo.

Bilbo HAS aged since the Hobbit; Gandalf's comment to him (you haven't aged a day) is, in my opinion, in reference to whenever Gandalf last saw him...which probably wasn't 60 years ago, since Gandalf is likely to have visited him since (in fact he visits him at least once at the end of The Hobbit, so..). Anyway, my point is...Bilbo in the Hobbit film should not look to be the same age as Bilbo in Lord of the Rings; he should appear significantly younger. Does he have to look 60 years younger? Well, yes...but again, 60 years to a hobbit is not the same as 60 years to a human, so it doesn't need to be that drastic. In short; Ian Holm is probably too old to credibly play Bilbo without some serious CG intervention.

Gotcha. I guess there's room for interpretation of the text there as to whether/how much Bilbo has visibly aged between the two stories, as well as allowing for some healthy suspension of disbelief in any filmed version. I'd like them to be able to film the primary actors with minimal CG if possible as well. Even another actor in Ian Holm's mould would still allow for an aged Ian Holm to bookend the story somehow which would be nice. |

My only concern is that Mike Mignola (Hellboy) is in charge of the visuals/ character designs. While I am a fan of him and his work on Hellboy, I don't feel his style fits in with Middle Earth. I want to see the Hobbitt and not Hellboy 3.

Which I would be perfectly happy with; I have nothing but respect for Ian Holm and I think he made a splendid Bilbo in the trilogy.

I never did see the Knickerbocker stuff. I'd have surely got it if I did, or at least begged the parentals and wept copiously. I didn't know about it 'til I was an adult. I'd have wanted nine Ringwraiths! |

Out of curiosity who on this thread collects/collected the Toybiz Lord of the Rings toys when the movies came out? It is by far my largest, and personally important, toy collection. If I had, right now, to choose between Joes and LOTR, I'd pick LOTR in a heartbeat.
