While i do hate the whole Greedo shoots first (less that they changed the story and more that it just looked terrible) and the Jabba scene (cuz it looks terrible and the dialog is 90% redundant with the Greedo scene) the freaking Death Star assault went from merely "good" to Jaw Dropping. i LOOOOOOOOOVE the updated graphics there, so much better than the static models (they really didn't have the model work totally sorted until Empire, which you'll note had the least enhancements) seeing the x-wings and Ties actually dog fighting is just great, and it's so well integrated...

the thing I cant stand about the special editions (DVD versions) is when they took out Boba Fett's voice which was awesome.. and made it the same as Jango Fett's... HORRIBLE!

The only argument that gets traction is the Jabba scene.

Great thread.
It is unbelieveable that this came out a decade ago! A friend and brother both waited for tickets, we ended up with a surplus, so starting at midnight, I ended up seeing this thing 3 or 5 times that day. The best was in a huge theater in Philadalphia with stadium seating and the greatest sound system I've ever heard. The pod race sounded ridiculous! Wonderful work by Ben Burtt and Co. I left the theater after the first showing convinced I had seen the greatest thing ever! The speed of Darth Maul was just amazing! At the midnight showing, especially, it was pure joy to hear the crowd cheer uproariously at the introduction of each original series character. It's worth tracking down a bootleg just to hear the excitement of those with rose colored glasses. Of course, love was not meant to last. My biggest peeve happened moments into the film, actually. The Neimodians(sp?), well, trade federation aliens, have the most awful lip movement that don't even match the voices. How did the greatest effects company do worse at this than a ninja turtle movie from a decade before? JarJar didn't bother me too much, despite the grating voice and moments where his slapstick brings all momentum to a halt. It was more about the fact that it's damn near impossible to understand him when be may be saying things we need for the plot. I do like the fact that the Jedi seem to hate him even more than I could ever. After several viewings, I realized that I had no idea what the movie was about. Why was there a blockade again? It was never quite explained very well. Dumbest part, that made me the most irritated after seeing Episode 2? Why didn't you go back after the battle and BUY HIS EFFING MOM?!!?? Listen, people of Naboo: You are quite wealthy. I know anakin is not allowed to love his mom, or anyone(something your queen will learn to ignore) but maybe you could just do a favor for the kid who helped save your PLANET and just buy her and put her anywhere safe that she is not a sandy slave. It is possible that this peace of mind could keep this kid from slaughtering us all one day. |

Double post!
My favorite thing about the Special Editions, because I am torn as far as the good outweighing the bad, was since I had seen the movies so much, it was something new and exciting to look forward to in the theatrical release. There is a lot of cleanup done to fix small errors, or retcons, like Vaders eyebrows being erased on the DVDs. |

Out of the three prequels, Jar Jar & Nute Gunray aside, Episode 1 was the best acted of the three. Though EpIII was the all-around best, I have a greater appreciation for EpI than the train wreck that was EpII...

I remember my friend waiting in line for tickets to go on sale. The Phantom Menace craze was all over the local news stations. My teacher told our class, "What Kind of Idiot Would Wait In Line For A Movie?" Then I raised my hand and said, "Yvonne's brother waiting in line for tickets." Lets just say she was pissed after that. On the day the movie came out, my mom pulled me out of class to go watch it with my brother and our friends. I just remember my friend wearing his WCW Sting Mask and having his ticket in a back stage pass type of thing showing it to the ushers. Oh man did I have a feeling of WTF just happened in there after the movie was over. Eh to be young again.

Those that like it - more power to 'em. All the "improvements" are just add-ons in my book. They bring nothing new the to table except a bowl full of rage and red bull to exacerbate it. Just let me keep my original version and don't mess with it, please. |
