AFAIK, that was only true of the original Star Wars ~ i believe that it actually changed the rules, as since then it's become fairly commonplace on "epic event movies" to only have the title at the beginning and save anything else for the end. (Braveheart & The Dark Knight, for instance)
Besides, Lucas had other people direct Empire and Jedi... As for the other directors, I can't remember if Kasdan was a member or not, but for RoJ, that director was chosen specifically because he was NOT a member of the guild. I'm pretty sure he would asked one of his other friends to direct RoJ if they could have. |

It wasn't the title - it was the producer's name that was the issue. SAG said that if you put one person's name above the title, you had to print the lead actor's names, the director's names, etc. I don't think they have changed that rule. It was such an issue, Lucas still won't join the guild.

Wow, I forgot today was the day, likely because after Ep3 my love for Star Wars crashed and burned. I remember going to the theatre totally pumped for a great movie. I skipped watching any commercials or trailers to avoid spoilers. I had a bag of Taco Bell with me and I was set for greatness. I left feeling underwhelmed and confused by the sheer boredom of the movie. Jar Jar was rather brutal. Come one George, resorting to "stepping in dog crap" jokes, wtf ?!?
I have watched Ep1 a number of times since and it has grown on me. I really wish Qui-Gon and Maul would have lived as they were easily my two favorite characters of the prequels. I am cool with main characters getting killed off to enhance the story, but damn, the two best ones in the first of three movies, ouch. I liked Ep2 better than the Phantom Menace and I totally hated ROTS. The only good part in my opinion was Order 66. I hated, hated, hated Hayden Christiansen as Anakin. Lucas could have saved movie by putting cardboard cutouts of Hayden and Portman in their scenes. He could have superimposed their moving mouths and you would have had the same feel about their roles. Ep3 tried to link every freking lose end between that movie and the original trilogy. That was way too much to try to fit into 2+ hours. I think my biggest b*tch about the movie was the ease that Anakin switched to the darkside. The dude has a dream, then a conversation with a creepy old man, then goes holy crap to save my wife, I gotta choke her. Yet another WTF moment. Lucas' dialogue is so bad he should be legally declared mentally deficient. (Ya, I know I probably spelled something wrong, but you get my obnoxious meaning. ) I think some of us older guys and gals who were around to watch Star Wars in the theatre in 1977 did not like the new movies because we're not kids anymore. When I was 5 years old watching SW I couldn't care less about plot holes or completely illogical stuff. The action and characters were awesome. Who couldn't wait to get a Han Solo or Darth Vader action figure. Now, as adults we could drive a bus through some of the plot holes and the bad dialogue seems really bad. Anyway, enough of my ranting, I'm off to watch the Phantom Menance. Cheers y'all!!! |

I'm not a big SW fan, but even I was taken into the mania, namely with Darth Maul. I bought everything with him on it that I could. His visual was (and still is) so bad ass. I thought he was going to be this awesome character that lasts all the way up to Ep 3, I mean c'mon, that double bladed saber!?
My buddy (Double S on here) watched it before I did, and I remember asking him about it, specifically about how my main man Darth Maul came out... He treated me like a kid about to find out that Santa isn't real, lol! My Darth Maul shrine soon came down and that was that. Jeez, ten years ago...time flies... I bet in '89 they were like WTF...1999!? I was thinking about The Matrix and American Pie being a decade old too.

When I walked out of the theater, I can remember being disgusted and thinking "I waited 16 years for that!?".
Of course there was foreshadowing in the Special Editions. My peeves (other than Jar Jar and Anni) No Armor or other costumes worth a damn. No props worth a damn. examples (comm links made out of lady leg shavers and a wiffel ball thrower in Anakins room) Gungan Boss Nuff said. |

I agree. I think people read too much into the Jar Jar thing after the fact. The way I see it, we wouldn't have had Episodes 3, 4, 5 and 6 if not for Jar Jar being so stupid and easily manipulated. I am not some hardcore fan though so I can't say that I've read all of the arguments as to why Jar Jar was such as bad part of the movies.
