Saw a sneak preview of it tonight. Hasbro only got a quick reference as the maker of Ted in the first one, but they were a huge component of the plot in this one. Explaining their role in the movie isn't really spoiling anything, but just telling you the set up in advance.
What's crazy is if they hadn't agreed to appear in this, they would probably want to sue to get their name out, because they're portrayed in a very negative light. Can't imagine this happening in the '80s, but in this day and age when any news is good news and brand exposure is worth its weight in gold at all costs, I guess they didn't mind their role being a negative one. The Hasbro logo at their offices is seen in huge close-up on the screen several times. There are lots of shots of display cases with recently released Hasbro-owned property toys, nothing licensed, but I didn't see any Joe sadly. Lots of Transformers, Mashers, MLP, Kre-O and Play-Doh. The Hasbro exec is heard on the phone and in meetings talking about comic con and trying to create their best brand rollouts ever for it. He then gets involved directly in the plot via one of the first movie's returning characters and is in several scenes through the end of the movie. There are also lots of scenes at the New York Comic Con where lots of cosplay characters cameo. The comic con scenes fizzle a little though and not enough seems to be done with the comedic possibilities there. The movie is one of the better comedy sequels out there but not as consistently funny as the original. It's stronger in the first half when the jokes flow naturally from the plot. But by the end they seem to have run out of comedic ideas related to the plot and throw in more and more zany asides that drain away the story's momentum. But Ted remains a lovable curmudgeon and any fan of the character won't be disappointed. Last edited by JediJones; 06-24-2015 at 12:18 AM.. |

Strange that G.I. Joe merch didn't even get a small appearance, I get the impression that Seth Macfarlane is a fan.
Good to know that there are some laughs to be had, though. I liked the first one, so I'm probably going to see this one as well. |

They even name drop the Hassenfeld brothers at one point.
It was funny how most of the theater was not laughing as hard at all the "nerd" jokes as I was, like a Star Wars/Star Trek bit and a Mattel reference They loved the pot jokes though. It feels like it's going to measure up to the original for about half of the movie, then it loses its focus and gets more random. Seth Macfarlane shows his obsession with musical showtunes with two long song/dance scenes which really waste a lot of time and barely even have any jokes in them. That was a bad bit of self-indulgence on his part. There is another heartwarming scene like the first movie had that reminds you how lovable Ted is. When the movie gets a bit confused about what it's supposed to be doing near the end, the characters still hold it together. A lot of the items displayed were in the background so I can't be 100% there were no Joes. But I looked hard and I couldn't see anything. The color of the packaging all seemed to be on the white and bright side, so maybe the cinematographer didn't think the darker Joe packaging worked in the scene. Or maybe Hasbro only supplied their currently non-exclusive brands as props. Last edited by JediJones; 06-25-2015 at 12:21 AM.. |

The main Hasbro guy's desk had one shot, where off to the right, was a display of at least 30 of the 12" Joes in a clear type of display. It wasn't on screen very long though.
