I finally saw it at the drive in, and while it was better than I expected, it was just ok.
I think they explained the altered timeline ok, but I couldn't understand the animosity, Nero had for Spock. It was obvious that Spock had tried to save Romulus, and they captured him while trying to save the planet so why did Nero blame him. It also didn't make sense to me why he was so hell bent on destroying Vulcan when that event guaranteed that Romulus would die in the future when he could have contacted the Science Directorate gave them a heads up on the supernova so they could have worked to prevent it. Quick rundown of what I thought of the characters: Kirk- he was ok, a bit of a douche Spock- I thought he was probably the best of the characters Sulu - didn't impress me Uhura- was surprisingly good Chekov- annoying as hell Scotty- a bit over the top, but should have had more screen time Bones- a close second to Spock for a great characterization I was a bit put off by how different the enterprise looked inside. Way more futuristic and armed to the teeth than the Original. I just chalked that up to the f'd up timeline. Essentially, as Romulan ambassador, the Romulans did not trust Spock or Spocks warnings about their planet going cablooey. Spock comes up with a way to stop it against the will of the Romulan government who thinks they know better. Nero believed him since Nero was part of the team that originally discovered the problem in the first place and set out to help Spock in his quest to stop it from happening (continuity flub here, where in the movie Spock & Nero seem to meet for the first time). Things go awry, Nero looses his family & everything and sets out for revenge on Spock. If Nero hadn't have gone with Spock, he would have gone to Romulus and rescued his wife/unborn child, but because he trusted Spock, and Spock failed... well you know the rest. There are holes in it, but essentially, that's it... I thought the movie was great but relied to heavily on lens flares. |

They explain the animosity between Spock & Nero a little better in the comic prequel "Countdown". But I would agree that for folks that do not read funny books, there could be a bit of a disconnect. But I don't think it's necessarily that strong a disconnect.

The green chick is Scarlett by the way. I thought it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Trek is the only big budget Summer flick that hasn't let me down in any way. Here's hoping Potter (seeing it next weekend) and Joe (opening day!) can match it!
