As for Kirk, I did think he was competent enough to be Kirk, according to the context clues going on around the central scenes near the beginning. He was apparently acing most of the tests thrown his way, just not Spock's which wasn't passable. Granted, he seemed very brash and he was obviously young, but it seemed like he had his stuff in order at the same time. I am not sure it's been mentioned yet, read nearly all the posts, but I think old Spock is from the Trekverse we know, and this new one is parallel universe they hopped to through the blackhole. The key to this is the fact that young Spock mentions that Romulans and Vulcans share a common ancestry even though in the regular Trekverse this was not divulged until the Balance of Terror episode. No one on the Enterprise in that episode even knew what a Romulan looked like until then, but young Spock seemed to know. If Nero was in prison for 20 years, there'd be no way to find this information out either. Edit: Oh and I loved the movie, I thought it was a great way to breathe some life back into things.

Although I dont consider myself a Trekkie, I thought this new Star Trek film was nicely done without the usual political correctness associated with past star treks.

Anybody else think it was awkward for the guy who hits on all the woman folk in his class to suddenly be in charge of the ship? Uh... where's the HR harassment officer?
On the old TV series, Kirk only hit on the alien women, i.e. non-crew members, well minus the Uhura kiss... but you know what I mean. |

Saw it last night. The first ten minutes left me choked up and in awe. My girl had a tear in her eye, turning to me with a, "Wait! This is Star Trek, it's not supposed to be this good and genuinely emotional!", look on her face.
Some elements of the story had fridge logic, and frankly Nero is no Khan or Chang by any stretch as far as great villains go. The main cast, however, and the increadible shout-outs to past Trek, were just masterfully done. Zach Quinto is an awesome Spock, and you can really see a younger, more rash version of Leonard Nimoy's character, brilliant, but still finding himself. Hell, that could descrbie all the crew. McCoy got laughs, and whoever said he was channeling the spirit of Deforest Kelly wasn't far off. Kirk with a green-skinned babe, Sulu's "fencing", Sulu flying to the rescue at the end, and even Scotty's mentioning of Admiral Archer's prize beagle (Holy shit! We even an Enterprise shoutout?!). And the scene at the end, between Nimoy, whose character has probably more than any other, defined Star Trek and the Federation, and Quinto, face to face across generations. It was genuinely touching and geeky at the same time. So yeah, I hope to see a sequal, but let's just get a worthy adversary for Kirk. A big scary ship is fine, but the guy inside better be worth it. BTW: When running a search for "Star Trek VI villain" for Chang's name (which had escaped me), Google came back with "Did you mean Star Trek II villain?" Yes friends, even google recognizes how f*&%ing awesome Khan is. |

I finally saw it at the drive in, and while it was better than I expected, it was just ok.
I think they explained the altered timeline ok, but I couldn't understand the animosity, Nero had for Spock. It was obvious that Spock had tried to save Romulus, and they captured him while trying to save the planet so why did Nero blame him. It also didn't make sense to me why he was so hell bent on destroying Vulcan when that event guaranteed that Romulus would die in the future when he could have contacted the Science Directorate gave them a heads up on the supernova so they could have worked to prevent it. Quick rundown of what I thought of the characters: Kirk- he was ok, a bit of a douche Spock- I thought he was probably the best of the characters Sulu - didn't impress me Uhura- was surprisingly good Chekov- annoying as hell Scotty- a bit over the top, but should have had more screen time Bones- a close second to Spock for a great characterization I was a bit put off by how different the enterprise looked inside. Way more futuristic and armed to the teeth than the Original. I just chalked that up to the f'd up timeline.
