Especially how crappy the toys are (wait i'm thinking of Terminator's toyline).
I'm not a huge trek fan, but this was an excellent movie. Really if anything I'm pissed that the last 3 Star Wars movies weren't what they could have been, especially after getting to see a Relaunch/Prequel like this one and also the recent Batman movies. The casting was perfect. The actors had great chemistry with one another, and charisma for their roles. This was something very lacking in the Star Wars prequels. The film had heart; you cared about the characters and what happened to them. As I've also said before, I'm really happy for the Trekkies. They should be very grateful the object of their affections has been so lovingly recrafted. We JoeFans won't be nearly so fortunate, methinks. Of course, it could be worse. We could be Dragonball Z fans. Remember "Dragonball Evolution"? No? Neither does anyone else. |

shatner and nimoy are in there late 70's so you can't go forward with them, besides shatner's kirk was killed off. the next generation cast are getting up there as well so you can't really go forward with them either. and besides first contact the next gen flicks were weak.
so your left with 4 options. a total reboot, or a prequel that fits in with the original timeline, a sequel to nemesis with a brand new crew, or this alternate universe star trek which is sprung from changes made to the original timeline. a total reboot would have been to drastic a move and it would have lost the support of diehard fans. a prequel thats fits in with the established continuity would have limited the story too much. a brand new crew would have been interesting. but it probably would have been to risky for paramount. so what they came up with was probably the best thing to with the star trek franchise. yes the story wasn't that strong, but i think the point of the film was the crew and and how they came to be. i think will see better stories in the future films. Quite frankly, I'm loving the "step back" to the Kirk-era Trek for one other reason: It's quite simply a more exciting time period within the Trek franchise. Outside of the Dominion War TNG Trek's era was...pretty sedate. It had lost the "Wild West" tinge of the original series. Picard was more of a diplomat than an "adventurer" and while that made him a great Captain for his time (and Patrick Stewart is a fantastic actor), he never had the "spark" that Kirk did. Heck, the fact that they had to give him a first officer (Riker) that embodied more "Kirk-like" elements than Picard did was rather telling. |

I've always been a Star Wars fan, and other than seeing a few of the Trek movie in theaters, never really got into the series.
However, when I saw the movie this past Saturday I was blown away. This is the first time I've ever been excited or even interested in the franchise. I'll probably even go see it again while it's in the theater. So know from a person who is not a Star Trek fan, this movie really drew me into the franchise. I can't wait to see what JJ does next!

It is good to hear that they already greenlit a sequel. Hopefully JJ will come back to do it.
Good time to be a ST fan.

70 million in it's opening weekend tells me that there are a lot of people out there who felt like wasting money this weekend. I wasn't one of them though so /shrug. I still say there is absolutely no reason to spend a dime on movies like this since they'll be out on DVD before Christmas.

I'm guessing since Abrams reached out to him, that Shatner wanted too much dough or screentime to be in this thing. Or he had a problem "handing off" the character to somebody else.
Because it would have been simple enough to have Old Spock travel "back to the future" at the end of the film, where he discovers that Shatner Kirk is now alive and well due to the altered timeline. Shatner and Nimoy share 5 minute scene, ride off into the sunset, roll credits. But that places the end emphasis on the old cast more than the new, so I totally understand why Abrams balked on this once Shatner began playing hardball. And there's really nothing to preclude them from getting Shatner in a sequel if they wanted to. Mirror universe, altered timelines, etc. There are a lot of "outs" in the Star Trek universe. And I agree with those who say this movie was made for Star Wars fans. |

The movie was awesome. I loved it and so did my wife and friends. I have never been into star trek but this movie has be engaged now. Like someone state earlier, this movie has heart, likeable characters. I knew some of these actors from other movies and they did a great job. The relationship between Kirk and Spok was the best IMO. It was everything you'd want in a summer blockbuster and I can't wait for a sequel.

Not really interested in seeing the new film.
It's sad that the 'old' STAR TREK universe isn't "cool" or "exciting" enough that they have to change it so much. It's also frustrating to see that if I ever declare a preference for the original I'm still considered a 'nerd', whereas fans of the new film are 'cool'. DS9, ENTERPRISE and (to a lesser extent) VOYAGER produced some stunning television episodes during their runs, yet all get dismissed under the 'nerd' banner. I somehow doubt the new film will have anything near the depth, charisma or warmth of any of the previous iterations yet will get a 'free pass' simply because it's "cool" and (*shudder*) "sexy". Same thing happened with DR WHO: Whenever I say I like the old series better, people who have just been raving about the latest version suddenly point and call me an 'anorak'.... can't argue with logic like that can I? It's glossy, it's slick and has great effects so it must be better... :( And just in case someone thinks I'm being hypocritical for supporting the changes to GI JOE while disliking them in STAR TREK, I honestly don't think they can be compared. TREK has only ever had ONE universe and it's main medium has been visual (television and films). JOE is more 'flexible' and has existed in many different forms with no one 'true' direction and so I accept that it should evolve when being adapted for the big screen for the first time. I do expect the TREK film to be a hit though, and we'll get a whole new series of movies with this cast. Great. If people love them then fine, I won't whine and insist the film be done "my way or not at all" - I'll just sigh at the passing of a 'long term friend' and stick to my extensive DVD collection. One final thought: It would be interesting to have all the people who rave about the new film watch some classic DS9 or ENTERPISE episodes and get their opinion of them. I suspect they'd still be dismissed as 'nerd fodder' and if so would pretty much prove that the new film is TREK in name only.

STAR TREK has always had 'heart', 'likeable characters', great stories, strong philosophies and interesting relationships, so why only jump on board now with the new film?
