I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I was afraid that it couldn't live up to the insane trailer, but it did. I think the biggest problem with it though is that it isn't a Mad Max movie, it's a Furiousa movie. She's the star of the film and has all the character development. Max is just too undefined. I get that he's crazy since he couldn't save his family, but it's hard to accept him as the badass he is in the whole film when it took him all of two minutes to get captured at the beginning. He really needed to get his car back at the end too. I really like Tom Hardy in pretty much everything he's in, but I don't think he was the best choice for this role. For one, he's a bit too burly. It doesn't fit for a guy that is supposed to be living off two headed lizards. And his accent seems to change in every scene. I'm glad it was him that got the role instead of somebody like Jeremy Renner or Sam Worthington, but I can't help but think that Christian Bale in his John Conner mode would have been the perfect choice. And we all know that he can do "mad".
Still, it was a fun movie and the 3D was the best that I've seen in years. It was really refreshing to see that after the 3D in Avengers too was so non-existent. The rest of my summer theater list is: 1. Mission Impossible 5 - The only sure thing left. 2. San Andreas - The latest trailer, in 3D, really made it look better. 3. Jurassic World - Just for solely nostalgic reasons. The trailers make it look awful though. |

The action was extremely well-directed. For all that was going on and how fast it was, it was very easy to follow. Max himself seemed a little weak on character development. They dived back into the well of his angst over losing his daughter a few too many times by the end. I would agree that a leaner, more classically handsome actor like Bale would be a better replacement for Mel than a bruiser like Hardy. Batman was better to play the hero than Bane. There are also some big plot holes that are difficult to ignore.
SPOILERS... The supplicants at the end don't seem angry at all that their god has been killed. I'm not sure why they waited until Charlize came back to release the water, if all the cats were away, other than extreme devotion to his rule. Plus, most of the army was just delayed in returning. Was Charlize going to be safe once the rest of the troops got back? Could no one but Charlize's truck get through the mud? She had an awful lot of time to be safe talking to her girlfriends. They found a way through it, but not one in an entire army of vehicles could figure it out for themselves? I'm not sure what happened when Max walked away into the fog and came back with blood on his face. Not really a plot hole, but hard to believe the villains were that close but he could find them and they couldn't find our heroes. Seems like kind of a lucky break that Charlize found the naked girl in the desert. What are the odds of coming upon that exact right spot? OK, not that out of the ordinary for a sci-fi movie, since Luke magically landed on Dagobah right where Yoda lived. Although I think the theory there is Yoda guided his X-Wing down with the Force. It seemed to be a stretch that Max would trust the teen girl that the white-faced villain was on their side now, after that guy had enslaved him. Especially since he stopped the girls from doing stupid things before. Last edited by JediJones; 05-24-2015 at 03:45 PM.. |

I'm just happy to have a new mad max movie.
I like how they made it a stand alone story. To be honest as a long time mad max fan, this what I wanted at this point . Mel had his day, he was awesome.....but the torch was passed along very well. 2 things I would have like to gave seen in the movie though were : 1. MEL CAMIO 2. It ended too soon. I wanted to see Furiosa take the throne as leader ( not just have it implied ) All in all in happy with the new max flick. Hope it's not 29 years before another. Oh.. P.S the bad guy was epic !!!!
