The studios know how to screw up a good thing don't they?
They put out a movie based on a comic character......it does well at the box office first round when the character is bastardized (Punisher, Hulk) but isn't done well enough for audience members to want a sequel. but when the sequel is done it's a whole new reboot....and the reboot is an actual representation of that character (Punisher War Zone, Incredible Hulk...and now talks for Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Judge Dredd) This movie was a GREAT representation of the comic character but it ended up flopping and not earning as much money as Tom jane's Punisher or Lundgren's early 90's Punisher. BUT YET....it is still the closest to any comic incarnation of the character. I'm buying it because I liekd the movie alot aside from the gore. Ray is yet the best Punisher to come about! |

Yeah I'm stoked for this to come out. I'm a huge Punisher fan and this is absolutely the best version to date. I own both the other movies as well, they suck pretty bad but like I said I'm a huge Punisher fan.

I tried to watch it, I can say that Ray Stevenson did a much better job and was an impressive choice for Frank Castle/Punisher (loved him in HBO's Rome). The action is what you would expect, bullet casings galore, blood by the gallon, it was Punisher grade action no doubt.
..and for me that's about all they did right. The rest was just bad. real bad. The acting (with the exception of Stevenson)..this was direct-to-video type writing. I know it's Punisher and not exactly a Thespian wet dream but what the hell were they thinking with Jigsaw and his wacky gang of goons? That's another thing, Jigsaw's makeup was just awful, so cheap. For the amount of money it takes to make a movie these days, I find it hard to believe that was the best they could do, he looked like he had a pizza face. A Punisher film should be one of the easiest things to pull off in Hollywood, especially when you have years worth of quality work by Garth Ennis' run to use. Total geek-a-fied rant I know, but it boggles the mind why they can't get this character right on film. I also don't get why so many fans actually enjoyed this, maybe because of the good that I mentioned, I guess it's easy to ignore the cheese and enjoy it for what it is. I just can't get over how craptastic Jigsaw was, why did they have to give him and his goons so much screen time? ...and am I the only one who blurted out "Hello..Newman." when Wayne Knight showed up? I was a huge Punisher comic book fan back in the day. I absolutely loved the Punisher: War Journal comic book series.
With that said I have never see any of the 2 recent Punsiher movies. I saw the one back in the day with "Ivan Drago"...LOL, but that was years ago and I don't really remember it too much. I would like to know if I shoud go ahead and purchase the last 2 Punisher movies, or should I not even bother wasting my money because I'm in for a let down. For instance I couldn't stand the Hulk movie that was out a few years ago, but I liked the "re-boot" Icredible Hulk with Edward Norton so I bought that one on DVD. I do not own the other one. Please let me know of your thoughts on this matter.

I'll also agree, in comparison with the first two, yeah..I'll cut War Zone a bit of a break. Well if they do another and he's still on board, perhaps the fourth one will be the definitive Punisher film. As for your question Scoop, even with my rant from earlier I'd say skip the Thomas Jane flick and just give War Zone a rent and make your call there whether to own it or not. |

Agreed 100%. I don't think Ennis would have appreciated them bastardizing some of his characters (Maginty a dancing clown, Pitsy an oafish fat Sopranos reject). Its crap, but I'm amused by it now in a bad Sci-Fi channel movie way, not that I know what to expect. |

You know I might as well pick up the last 2 Punisher movies on DVD tomorrow at Best Buy. The extended cut of the Thomas Jane one is on sale for $5.99. Might as well buy it for that price. The War Zone 2-disc version is $19.99 so I will just buy both.

I'm in the middle of watching it again, some terrible one liners in here that I know are gonna join the ranks of b-movies most infamous.
My two faves so far are.. "I'm gonna get my apple sauce back.." and "Sometimes I'd like to get my hands on God." I was reading over at Wikipedia that this is Marvel's lowest grossing film to date, you think that had to with the R rating? you figure it missed out all on the family cash not being PG-13.
