No, it was 80s pop. To me 80s pop was too...bubbly, upbeat, for a movie like this. Watchmen is a very serious movie about the world being in a very dark place. In my opinion the sappy 80s pop made it a tad bit campy. Some movies should be dark and a bit dismal, not every movie is cheerful. Watchmen should be serious and the 80s music was a tad silly.

Read the comic at least twice (maybe three times, can't remember), loved it.
Watched the movie, loved it as well. I loved the inclusion of Bob Dylan and '80s tunes to the soundtrack, as well.

The songs weren't necessarily bad - they just didn't fit, and they tended to draw your attention away from what was supposed to be going on. And fer crissakes - the whole softcore sex scene with Nick Cave's cover of "Hallelujah" blaring over it was one of the corniest things I've ever witnessed. And I used to watch "Full House" back in the '80's.
And I'll agree that Alan Moore is self important. I liked the V For Vendetta movie a lot, but I read an article where he dismissed the movie as garbage because it was American-ized (the way a lot of British stories are when they become American movies, like High Fidelity) - and for no other reason than that. A bit pompous, but so few celebrities aren't. It was totally anti-climactic. Like I said, I didn't read the book, but I saw most of the reveals coming, and wasn't impressed with any of it. It just seems to me that newer movies lack so much more than what movies used to deliver. Of recent movies (within this genre), I enjoyed both Hellboy movies a lot - because they didn't take themselves too seriously, and you could forgo the ridiculousness of them because they were f-u-n to watch. The Transformers movie (except for the whole romantic subplot) was the same - to me, it was the next evolutionary step in giant monster movies like Godzilla (which I love). This movie was just aggravating and extremely diappointing, because it had the potential to be so much better. But then, most movies end up that way these days. |

One thing you have to understand is that the Watchmen aren't really super-heroes... just heroes in costume, no powers. The only super-human among them was Manhattan. The rest, including Nite-Owl and Rorschach, had no power to speak of. Ozymandias's strength comes from physical conditioning and application of physics in motion - think Aikido or Jujitsu.
I agree, the soundtrack was a little overbearing. I thought the sex scene could've been scrubbed to fit in Hollis' murder. The rest, IMO, was perfect. Even the changed ending worked better for film translation purposes. |

It takes place in 1985 which is why they used some 80's music. Also, the two 80's songs they use have a reason....both are about nuclear war.

I say if you're a fan of the comic or are a big fan of comic-book movies then go out and see it in the theaters. For casual fans it may be just a rental, though.

It was ok, I think I would have been ok just seeing a movie mostly about Rorschach, But I like Batman
As for the music, I felt it reminded you what timeframe the movie was in and seemed to talk about the scene at the time. In fact if you listen closely, I believe that the elevator music playing during the scene where Ozymandias fights the guy at the elevators is Tears for Fears' "Everybody wants to rule the world" Which seemed to fit Ozymandias perfectly at the time. |
