It was a great movie. The general them of the original story was maintained very nively. I question their choices in soundtrack though. It was, like minstrelboy said, kind of distracting, and I think it might be one of the reason he saw the movie as cheesy.

haven't seen it, but i keep hearing how the music was awful/distracting amongst other things. can anyone be a little more specific as to what kind of music it was? is it full or death metal or something?

No, it was 80s pop. To me 80s pop was too...bubbly, upbeat, for a movie like this. Watchmen is a very serious movie about the world being in a very dark place. In my opinion the sappy 80s pop made it a tad bit campy. Some movies should be dark and a bit dismal, not every movie is cheerful. Watchmen should be serious and the 80s music was a tad silly.

I've tried to read the comic several times, but I think it is absolutely terrible. I can appreciate how it was groundbreaking for a comic in the 80's, but comics nowadays are more mature and tackle complex themes, and do it better. the dialogue is bad, the exposition boring, the characters contrived, and the plot simply not interesting. this is dated material that just doesn't hold up over time. it will be interesting to see how well it does this weekend. I am willing to bet it drops significantly because interest in it simply isn't high and it is no longer relevant.

A lot of the music is from all eras throughout the existence of the heroes. From the 40s to the 80s. The story is set in 1985, so the music from the 80s does make sense. There was only one time i remember an 80s pop song playing and that was 99 red balloons during the dinner scene between Dan and Laurie.
A lot of the songs in the movie are actually in the book. Excerpts and things like that are throughout the pages. There is a huge list of copyright information for the songs at the beginning of the book. I wouldn't be surprised to see if the songs selected were the songs in the book. There are obviously, such as 99 red balloons, placed in moments like the dinner scene to help lighten the mood and reflect the era. The only hero with powers is Jon, or Dr. Manhattan. The rest are just well trained. In the movie they obviously over exaggerate that. Ozymandias is the only one whose "lack of powers" could be questioned to any real extent. The book seems to hint that they may have powers, but its the general consensus that they don't.

I've read the graphic novel and seen the movie.
I enjoyed both. One thing about a movie I really want to see, I try to never get my hopes up beforehand, and I always read all the negative reviews. That way I already know whats going to suck about it before it starts. I usually enjoy the movie more that way. |

I think you are a right for the most part, though. The book is extremely dated. My wife read it before i did and she finished it up with a resounding "That's it?" I finished and all i had to ask was "Why do people think this is so important?" Kinda like when we have sex. Alan Moore is generally a self important guy. People give him creditability because he looks like the uni bomber, but most of his work is forgetful. Once you've seen his work you take what you get at face value and you leave. Most of his work believes it's important, but the characters all say what they mean and do what they feel. There is little subtext. After that, you're left with little to care about and nothing to muddle over and remember. That's how i felt about Watchmen. I enjoyed the brief ride, hardly raised an eyebrow, and i just don't care anymore.

i just recently read it (at a friend's urging), and i can understand most of the points being made, both positive and negative.
overall, it left me with a sort of "meh" feeling. i found the mysterious plot pretty engrossing for most of the way through, but once that is solved the story just sort of falls apart and devolves into a series of long, dull monologues and such. all that being said, i didn't really get a dated feeling from it, at least from a non-comic book reader standpoint. that is the only comic book i have read in roughly the past 15 years, do maybe it would feel less fresh if i had been keeping up with my reading for the past 2 decades. i wouldn't call it the worst thing ever, or the best thing ever. i can't say i have any particular desire to see the movie. |
