I like rap/hip-hop but I have not heard anything good in quite a while. I guess I like what is labeled as 'indi rap'; El-P, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif etc. I grew up listening to Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim and NWA etc. When old school rappers have a new release I feel like I'm beaten over the head with how great they are and I mostly miss with newer artists. Please help.
What are new rap CDs do you like now?

LOL. I love ol skool, but the most recent stuff I've enjoyed? Fatlip from the Pharcyde released a CD about 2 years ago. It's the best I've enjoyed in a long time. Other than that? Incredibad, The Lonely Island cd? It may be a bunch of SNL songs, but it's miles better than the Hip-Pop and Crap music that passes as talent today. I'm talking to YOU solja Boy....
Even Jurassic 5's last CD wasn't that good to me. It's difficult to find ANYONE who's on Rakim's level. I like Common, but I admit that I passed his latest release. Kanye West's ego overshadows any of his songs, so I have no desire to bother anymore. Last edited by RoadShlock; 02-20-2009 at 04:54 PM.. |

I'm right there with you when it comes to "indi" or what i call REAL hip hop. If your into El-p you should check out Sole or Sage Francis...anything done by Mad Lib (including his works as rapper Quasimoto) are all top notch. As for new hip hop, I think Murs came out with a CD recently but I dont really like it that much...his older stuff with producer 9th wonder is really good. also, a brother duo that go by The Knux has a CD out that i really enjoy. If your asking about new hip hop thats more with the trends, then I can't help you much except to say that Lil Wayne has been owning rap for the past year so you may want to check out that garbage.

Can't say I listen to anything really new. I used to keep up to date on Hip Hop, especially underground/local stuff but about 4 or 5 years back everything just got a little too experimental (which is saying a lot cause I was loving the avant garde movement for a while) or long time favorites switched from sampling to going full digital blips! and bloops! and every beat was the same and proper breaks were nowhere to be found.
I do however still enjoy Jedi Mind Tricks, not so much for the lyrics but I love me some classical samples. For me they are kind of where Wu left off, the only bit of new Wu I can handle is Ghostface. I did hear some new Grouch tracks not that long ago which weren't bad, he was always a fave outta Living Legends. Common, MF Doom, and Madlib still seem to be putting out decent stuff. Last Hip Hop track I was bumping was L'roneous "Doctrines of the Lip Swift", if you never heard of him I highly recommend you track down the album "Imaginarium" and give it a listen. Definitely a slept on album, same goes for anything by Third Sight. Last edited by CallMeRotten; 02-20-2009 at 05:44 PM.. |

Been on an oldschool kick this week (with a little of the middle). Listening to "Nation of Millions" right now. Earlier it was "Enter the Wu-Tang." Drove all night listening to Beasties.
