I love how most of the true hip hop heads representing in this threat are from Kila Cali. We know our hip hop on the west coast baby. And if your looking for good music from West coast rappers then check out...DJ shadow, busdriver, Living Legends, Blackalicious, Zion I, dudley perkins, etc etc...

and because nobody's mentioned him yet- I'm a huge Saul Williams fan... not strictly hip hop, but if anybody's interested in a rap/rock/spoken word album filled to the brim with the truth, definitely give his self titled cd a listen... "This ain't hip hop no more, son, it's bigger than that. This ain't ghetto no more, black, it's bigger than black. So where my aliens at? Girl, we're all illegal. This system ain't for us. It's for rich people. And you ain't rich, dawg, you just got money. But you can't buy shit to not get hungry."

Hip-hop albums currently residing on my mp3 player:
1. Deltron 3030 - self titled album (2000): a "science fiction concept album" featuring one of my all-time favourite producers, Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. Also features Del Tha Funkee Homosapien on the mic and Kid Koala on turntablism. Video links: 2. The 45 King - Grooves for a Quiet Storm (1996): 45 King, a.k.a. DJ Mark, a.k.a. Mark James is one of the more underrated producers-DJs from the late 1980s/early 1990s (probably most famous for his production work on Jay-Z's 1998 crossover hit "Hard Knock Life"). This all-instrumental album is meant as a resource for DJs and producers to draw samples from, but it also makes for a surprisingly good chillout record. |
