I've been a fan of SNL since around 1986 or so when I first really sat down and watched it one night with my Dad and my Grandpa. I think I remember seeing SNL on tv late night in the early 80's when my Dad was watching it, but I never really paid attention to it......except for when I saw Mr. Bill, which I loved.
Around that same time I remember catching a bunch of the 70's reruns on television. It was VH-1 if I remember correctly. That was actually the first time I realized that the Blues Brothers originated on SNL. Throughout most of the 80's, I thought it was just a movie. (Interesting personal note regarding the Blues Brothers movie: I actually had the pleasure of seeing it during it's first theatrical release back in '82 [pretty sure it was '82] at my hometown drive-in theater. I remember I fell asleep about halfway through it though!) Back to SNL....A few questions for you guys. 1. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SKETCHES OR MOMENTS? 2. WHO WERE/ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CAST MEMBERS? 3. WHAT YEARS OR CAST WERE YOUR FAVORITE OVERALL? 4. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT SNL? 5. AND FINALLY....DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE GUEST HOSTS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS? I'll go first.... 1. What are some of your favorite sketches or moments? I have a LOT of favorite sketches and moments. A few that stick out in my mind are Dana Carvey's recurring "Grumpy Old Man" character ("....and we LIKED IT!!").....another one was Rob Schneider's "Sensitive naked guy", which hardly anybody ever remembers. Of course you gotta love Matt Foley the motivational speaker....and ya can't forget about Wayne's World. There are so many great ones. I'll list more of my favorites later. 2. Who were some of your favorite cast members? My all time favorite cast member had to be Dana Carvey. That wiry little turd always cracked me up and still does today. I can't really pick between Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and Adam Sandler. They were all hilarious and I don't know which one of those I like the most. 3. What years or cast were your favorite? I think probably 1989 or 90 had the best cast of all time. That was when they began adding a few feature players (such as Mike Myers and others who later became huge stars) to an already solid cast with the likes of Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, Nora Dunn, and Jon Lovitz among others. 4. What do you think of the current SNL? Can't stand it. It's unfunny. It's not clever anymore. The writing is atrocious. It seems like all they keep trying to do is make more "cowbell" moments, but they keep failing and just making sketches and characters that seem weird, desperate, and overall just plain boring. There will only be one cowbell moment and one Christopher Walken. The writers and Lorne Michaels need to realize this and get back to creating original, clever, funny sketches again. 5. Finally....do you have any favorite guest hosts throughout the years? Tom Hanks is my favorite guest host of all time. Of course you know he's a member of the elite "5 timers club" lol. He used to do a funny sketch with Jon Lovitz where they would play these really annoying, smarmy guys hitting on women passing by, but they never would always get snubbed and then....well....you'd just have to see it to know what I'm talking about. lol Also, you gotta love Chris Walken as guest host. His weirdness alone is funny enough to carry a whole episode. Alec Baldwin is usually solid as well. Remember that time he appeared as Canteen Boy's scoutmaster? lol John Goodman's another fav. What about you guys? Anybody a SNL fan? Don't leave me hanging with these questions! lol

Okay, I guess nobody here is the least bit interested in SNL.
Mods....please delete this. I would do it myself, but there's no delete button (that I can find at least). No sense in this cluttering up the board.

1. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SKETCHES OR MOMENTS?
Just about anything Chris Farley was in, Hans & Frans, The Church Lady, Wayne's World, Hernando's Hideaway (You look Marvelous), Dana Carvey's Grumpy Old Man, Eddie Murphy's Gumby, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, Chicken Make Lousy Housepet, Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy... 2. WHO WERE/ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CAST MEMBERS? Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Billy Chrystal, Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Tracy Morgan, Jimmy Fallon, and Horatio Sans. 3. WHAT YEARS OR CAST WERE YOUR FAVORITE OVERALL? Probably late '80's to mid 90's 4. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT SNL? It's not funny at all. They have moments, but they don't know when to end a skit. It's TOO political now. They've always made fun of presidents, but when you blatantly push an agenda, it gets annoying. There's no more great return characters anymore like The Church Lady and Wayne & Garth. Plus when you get older and don't know who the hell the host or musical guest is anymore, it kinda doesn't help. 5. AND FINALLY....DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE GUEST HOSTS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS? Any time it was a good comedic actor who could actually be funny like Tom Hanks or Jim Carey. When they have an actor that can't act to begin with, it's more painful than usual to watch. I think Will Ferrel is the most overrated person to come from SNL. All he's ever done is play varying degrees of the same character. And Amy Poler is annoying as hell!

i liked the early 90's stuff, but i think they blow now. they use the same formula.which makes it nothing but a current rerun.
they should just give up, and drop the show.i feel like they try too hard to be funny. some of the stuff would be funny if you saw it live, but its not for tv |

1. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SKETCHES OR MOMENTS?
"The Sinatra Group" with Phil Hartman as Sinatra, "The Barry Gibb Talk Show," Farley as Matt Foley getting in David Spade's face and almost making him laugh, Eddie Murphy as Gumby, Bill Murray performing a lounge version of the "Star Wars" theme, the "Alienses" sketch with Sigourney Weaver, when Charlton Heston hosted and they re-shot the opening credits with the entire cast wearing ape masks. 2. WHO WERE/ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CAST MEMBERS? For my money, Phil Hartman was by far the most talented and versatile actor in the show's history. The guy could just do anything. Not necessarily a leading man like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, or Will Ferrell, but the most reliable cast member ever. I hate, HATE, that he's gone. Darrell Hammond is another guy like that. I'm a huge Michael McKean fan. He was on during a terrible season but he did some funny stuff nevertheless. 3. WHAT YEARS OR CAST WERE YOUR FAVORITE OVERALL? Probably late 80s/early 90s. That's when I was most into the show. Hartman, Carvey, Lovitz, Miller, Nora Dunn, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, the early days of Mike Meyers. 4. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT SNL? I really haven't watched it too much in recent years. But I do like Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig. 5. AND FINALLY....DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE GUEST HOSTS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS? Alec Baldwin is always great. Hanks, Martin (who was never a cast member, contrary to popular belief), Christopher Walken, John Goodman, Paul Simon. Great thread, by the way Last edited by lister; 01-22-2009 at 11:14 AM.. |

Of the current cast Kristen Wiig is definitely a standout performer. Her impressions are dead on and her "funny" characters are hysterical.

im started watching snl in the early 90's and stopped in the mid to late 90's. the funniest episode that i can remember of the top of my head was an episode with christain slater. the club banana sketch had me rolling, and the warewolf sketch had me laughing so hard i almost pissed myself. i would have to say my favorite cast member is dana carvey, thats if i have to choose just one.....i enjoyed the first few seasons of mad tv much more than snl
