I've been reading this morning about the epic financial disaster of this film. I actually did see a couple of commercials for it (probably when "Clone Wars" was on). It's sad stuff. Apparently the director/producer/writer's dream was to make a big budget animated fantasy film outside of Hollywood and this was his story to tell. Production began in 1999 or something like that.
Statistics are like this: It cost 40 million to make and opened to about 500,000 in 2000 or so theaters, which apparently (so I read) averages out to ABOUT 2 people per theater. Poor guy. I hope he has some supportive friends and family to help him through this. |

The movies are recession proof, don't listen to anything else being said. I live in LA and work in the entertainment industry. TV not so much, but the movies are and always will be recession proof. It's not the economy, it's poor marketing or a poor project.

Yeah, the movie was not promoted at all. It is also not getting very good critical reception, either which won't help it. I didn't know that backstory about the director, though. Hollywood's full of feelgood stories, but there are a lot of stories full of heartache and failures, too.
It actually averaged $237 per theater, which is an average of about 25 people per showing.

Uwe Boll has made a career out of making movies that lose multi-million dollar figures. I see no reason why this guy couldn't do the same.
Not that Uwe is a shining example of the magic of cinema, but still. |

every single review I have read gave it one to one and a half stars, so I really don't think it's poor sales have to do with the recession

It's failure in theaters will practically garauntee peoples' curiosity when it comes to DVD and rental. Don't worry. He may not get everything back, but a lot of stuff that bombs in theaters does amazing at home. Krull probably made more on DVD 20 years after its initial release than it did in theaters.
Damn, I love the Firemares scene. |

Norbit, the Scary Movies, any of those horrible Meet the Spartans, Epic Movies and in general most comedies make way more on rentals and home video sales than they ever do at the theater. Animated movies also make a huge killing.

I've seen commercials for it, my girlfriend wants to see it. I sure dont, the animation looks awful, and I'd imagine the story isn't much better.

Movie making is a tough buisness, the return on invested capitol has to be perfect and since it is sorta of an art you have to be really good at what you do. Speilberg and Lucas had to work hard all these years to gain thier fan base, you have to have the ability to keep going after movies and make yourself better, and like all businesses your going to have to invest a lot to make a lot and if you cut corners and not keep up and make your customer (movie watcher) happy, then the chances of success diminish drastically
