I really enjoyed this. The music is HIDEOUS, though--for once the American score is IMMEASURABLY superior to the original Japanese Spanish/Disco thing they did. But Go-Lion is more coherent and the story is resolved at the end.
How violent it was! Children literally get cut in half with blood spurting in the episode with the Galra Death Commandos. Entire families slaughtered in that episode left in bloody pools with their eyes open and rolling up. I was like, whoah. I mean, I'm accustomed to morbid violence in anime but this WAS a show for kids in Japan. Don't get me wrong. I loved it, and would have as a kid, but I'm twisted. Anyway... In the next-to-last episode, Honerva (Haggar in Voltron) tells Sincline (Lotor) that she was Daibazaal's (Zarkon's) mother! She goes apeshit after Go-Lion destroys Daibazaal in his (I love this title) Mecha Deathblack Beastman. This relationship did not exist in Voltron. I just got my second copy of the Vehicle Voltron DVD's from amazon.com. My first copy would not play so I had to send them back and my replacement just got here. Hopefully THESE will play. I haven't seen Vehicle Voltron since the 1980's and am really looking forward to it. |

Yeah, I got the first Edition, I had NO IDEA how violent this Animation was, the first battle against a deathblack beastman was graphic as hell, not to mention they eat their combatants afterwards as a stew, man this is not Voltron, this is something truly superior. Wish cartoons had the balls to have such original ideas and imagery these days, not to mention atmosphere...planet Galra had a real atmosphere to it...freaky...and to think this was Anime in it's infancy.

I had a thread on this a while back when the first set came out. The funny thing is it's my daughter's favorite Anime now.

Daibazaal's outfit is based on a portrait of, I think, Charles the Bald? Let me see what I can find... |

A lot of the older Japanese animation brought to the US, violence is typically cut out. G-Force or "Gatchaman" also has its share of killing. When I think of it, a lot of the major robot shows have it as well.
But yeah, for Voltron, I was surprised by it as well. I still have to purchase the rest...I only have the first collection but personally, with so much anime tv series now finally going the box set route, I rather purchase it that way. Save more money that way as well. But for shows that will surprise you from Japan, check my youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=...99&view=videos
