An R rated TMNT movie for adults would do well, much like a kiddie rated did do decent with well, kids.
The idea had been thrown around with John Woo directing a few years ago. But surfaced as the latest CG flick. Keep it animated. No doubt. NO LIVE ACTION. But make it gritty. Example: John Stevenson is attached to the live-action adaptation of the Vertigo comic We3. The miniseries, by veteran writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely, involves a rogue trio of government-created, highly weaponized cyborg pets and their massively destructive quest to find their way home. And is slated to go after an R rating. Now, with TMNT get the demographic that has become adult, and is not into the kiddie treatment of the TURTLES anymore. And put them into seats to watch the R rated flick. (Remember, in the comics, the TURTLES, were not so cute, they were vigilantes much like a team of BATMAN-esque personas.) I sense that the TURTLES could do well considering the near 50/50 split of those who dig the kiddie TURTLE adventures, and those who can now put box office power behind the adult R rated adult themed TURTLES flick. There's money to be made on an R rated turtles flick. It's interesting, because it's one of the rare franchises that can really be split from kiddie stuff, to adult stuff and survive in both cinematic climates. Thoughts? |

a more violent gritty TMNT would be cool...but that wouldnt earn it an R rating...only sex and naughty language could do that...and do we really need to see an April,Casey+Leo threesome.
...and Splinter telling Shredder to go f*ck himself up the Sh*tter with those gauntlets?...

Back awhile ago it would have been cool. But not now. There's a small group that would love it, but it wouldn't have any major success at the box office. Not enough to generate it being made.
Now a Direct-to-DVD movie, that's a different story. That could sell well and do well. I can't see an R-Rated TMNT doing well at the box office. I would love to see a Turtle movie based off the original premise and not the kiddie-ized version. I've never seen the CGI film from couple years back. Not really interested in it. Something Direct-To-DVD could work real well.

The turtles were never meant for children in the beginning. The brainchild of Kevin Eastman ( who now owns the Heavy Metal Magazine franchise) I had the original magazine sized comics, and Im assure you, if my mother had seen these back in the day she would have thrown them out! I think that people figured they could make a ton of money by turning it into a kid thing and it paid off! All in all, I think an adult turtle movie has been long overdue!

I wonder if people realize how long the Turtles had been around before the kiddie-cartoon came out.

why does everything we liked as kids have to be turned grim and gritty? granted, the b&w turtles started out gritty, but how many of us knew about them before they became a hit? i dont ever see this happening, since tmnt is fairly successful with kids and an r - rated version of what many perceive as a childrens show would lead to quite a bit of parental outrage i'd imagine

A direct-to-dvd adults-version would work. Could cover the thing with "mature" labels and the parents would be happy then.

You know what I want to see.. a Grim and Gritty R Rated version of Rainbow Bright.. Heck Yeah.. That'd be Bad Ass...(Insert Healthy Dose of Sarcasm Here)
Anyway.. Actually I think a Direct to DVD Version would be awesome. I'd love to see the original idea put into movie form especially of Laird/Eastman had some creative control over it. I agree with Troynos I was disappointed in the 80's with some of the kidde stuff too.. I mean over time I grew to like the kiddie versions in their own way as well.. but that second movie when they took away the weapons...
