Hi Thunderdan,
Where you are going to see improvement are action films. For example, "TRANSFORMERS"....oh my....you can actually see the detail and scratches on the metal of Optimus Prime much more clearer. The video quality is phenomenal. "DARK KNIGHT" looks phenomenal as well. Both films just sound awesome. I've heard IRON MAN is awesome and I have the DVD but I was unable to score it for $15 during Black Friday...so, waiting for a next deal. The thing is right now, I have to pick and choose which I'm going to buy on Blu-ray and which I'm going to buy on DVD. I buy a lot of DVD's when they go on previously viewed at Blockbuster and Hollywood. Mainly due to price. But yeah, there is a major different in picture quality from certain films on Blu-ray versus DVD. Now if you owned the HD-DVD player for let's say an XBOX 360 or got it cheap during the K-Mart clearance for $13.99, then you can purchase a lot of HD-DVD's from Amazon like the big titles for like $5. But yeah, the picture quality is definitely a step forward for a lot of new films. But some of the older films, do your research because the old DVD's you have may have much more to offer than some of the first generation Blu-rays. You will find cheap blu-ray's like "Terminator 2" on sale for $10 at Wal-Mart. These cheap ones did not get a good transfer to Blu-ray and also, there were more special features on my DVD version than what is on the Blu-ray version. We watched Clone Wars on my TV using his blue ray player (my hdmi cable). It was really good and sounded great, but the picture didn't really look any better to me than if I would have watched it on my dvd player. |

Computer animated. Those are actually the best to judge picture quality because the picture starts off "perfect." Nothing out of focus, no wobbles, etc.

Thanks for all the good info, kndy! We watched Iron Man on my buddy's TV a few weeks ago. It looked great, but he doesn't have an HD TV (no HDMI input) so IMO it looked about as good as dvd Transformers looks on my TV.
We watched Clone Wars on my TV using his blue ray player (my hdmi cable). It was really good and sounded great, but the picture didn't really look any better to me than if I would have watched it on my dvd player. Actually, I noticed the improvement using HDMI than just component cables. (actually on my TV, I have an HDMI->DVI Converter since my 52" TV is three years old). As for animation, I know that WALL-E received good ratings for its quality. As has Cars. IGN seems to have favored them in their top 25 (but then again, there are a few questionnable ones on their list as well): IGN: IGN's Top 25 Blu-ray Discs The only animation that I own on Blu-ray right now are mostly anime-based.

Ummm...what? Special plug? An HDMI cable that is 1.3 compliant (most, if not all now) is everything you need. Techinically, if you don't have a 1080P capable tv, you can still get 720P over component, just no DVD upscaling. And in regards to the 120 HZ, there isn't even a source capable of taking advantage of that technology...yet.

But, then there is some movies where I don't see much of a difference, like Con Air. Yea I have T2 on DVD and BluRay and I didn't think it looked much better either. You are right about the special features, I have the Ultimate Edition on DVD and it has all the deleted scenes put into the movie where they belong, and it doesn't have it on the BluRay version.

You have to remember this is a young format and they were just attempting to get titles out up to this point. Now that the HD-DVD/ Blu-Ray war is done the studios can focus on putting out quality titles. That hampered a lot of growth for Blu-ray. But DVD had its hicups too, all new things do.
The growth of the format and quality of the titles for Blu-Ray are already way ahead of where dvd was at this stage in the game. Plus, Blu-ray players and discs have had the fastest decline in prices of any consumer electronic device or format in history. Dvd players were twice the price at this stage in the game and there were only a hundred, maybe two hundred titles out. Right now there are over 1100 titles released or announced. That will only grow exponentially after this holiday. A lot of these films only received 480p transfers to max out the dvd format, but save money as opposed to the1080p material and some of these may simply be software upconversions done by the studios to push titles out faster. Beginning in 2009 most, if not all of the titles should be true 1080p transfers with some substantial special features.

A few quick Blu-ray impressions:
LOST (SEASON 4) - Wow! The island is just vibrant with colors with the lush green plants really standing out, the blues of the sky and ocean really coming out. And yes, you can really see the pores and wrinkles of the actors and actresses quite well. There were some noise during the low light situations for a few scenes but there are a lot of special features in this set. Blu-ray has exclusive content which includes more from the LOST symphony concert and for Easter Egg fans, over 20 Easter Eggs and much more! Awesome on Blu-ray! A Christmas Story - Despite having a release on Blu-ray a few years ago, another Christmas Story Blu-ray was released. Nothing different. Mainly to celebrate the 25th Anniversary I believe they released an edition that came with the leg lamp. But essentially the same if you have the previous one. If you don't, then you're going to see a good difference from your old VHS tapes on the Blu-ray. I can't say that it looks modern because the film takes place during the 40's and being made in the 80's but it's a Christmas classic I wanted on Blu-ray and it's better on Blu-ray video wise. Audio...it's 1.0. There are a few special features like commentary and interviews with a few of the guys now and how the response towards the film has been throughout the last 20 years. I am guessing that the commentary and special feature may have been on the DVD re-release that came out five years ago. This is one that you rarely find on sale. So, expect to pay around $17-$20. The House Bunny - If you are a fan of Happy Madison films (ala Deuce Bigalow, Adam Sandler comedy films, etc.), this film is produced and stars Anna Faris who looks awesome in this film. About a playboy model who dreams of becoming a centerfold and on her 27th birthday waiting for Hef to give her the November centerfold, she ends up being kicked out because of her age. Homeless, she ends up being the housemother of a nerdy sorority. Think "Legally Blonde" meets "Revenge of the Nerds". Actually a fun film that is if you are use to Happy Gilmore type of films. Looks great on Blu-ray, audio is mostly dialogue and a lot of contemporary music. But all in all, a fun film which I don't think anyone could have pulled off that role so convingly. Anna Faris does a great job.
