Show me pics of your collection...
I used to have about 8 of these DVD shelves...
I have since decided to eliminate all shelves and put them in binders. Kept the covers and inside booklets but eliminated all clamshells (tried to sell them on Ebay at .01 for 50 and they just pay for shipping but no one was interested), so trashed them. |
KNDY, I sometimes think you are my like minded twin...Most all your posts are exactly what I am currently doing or thinking about...whether it be about toys or DVD's...I also own a large 1200+ DVD collection and have decided that they take up too much room and I am looking into DJ type cases to hold upwards of 300-500 dvd's per trunk...and just store the cases they came in. I am replacing my favorites with Blu-Rays as well, but I am going to be more particular with the titles this go around....

Now, the day we see blu ray players for $39.99 and bins of $5 blu ray disks at Wal Mart is the day you'll see more widespread adoption of the format. Until then, I'd say Blu Ray is nothing more than this generations laser disk. |
Well, It's hardly a "slight" improvement, but to each their own. Also, as you stated price is a factor, but they are coming down...when I first got into DVD they were almost as expensive then as blu-ray are now...all that matters is price..if they get the discs to the $16-$19 range like DVD, it will be adapted rather quickly and of course the studios will do this when they feel DVD has reached a tipping point...nothing like double dipping on all their films AGAIN! |

I also upgraded my TV to a 1080p LCD, with a BD player and home theatre, so Blu-Ray is well worth it.
I used to buy a bunch of DVDs at Blockbuster used though. I'd say about 1/4 of my collection was previously-viewed DVDs, which I didn't mind. I could get 4/$20 or 3/$20 when they had specials, and most of them were either Oscar-level films, or at least in the top 250 IMDB popular movies.
Of course, there were also guilty pleasures in there as well, but Blockbuster's used DVD section was the only reason I even visited Blockbuster. I'm one of those idiots who can watch a movie 3-4 times, so owning is much more cost-effective for me personally than renting, especially getting them at $5/pop or better.
But to each his own, I love film, so I splurge on that and Joes. (used to be TFs) Those are my vices, no video gaming for me. |

I don't buy as many DVDs right now, for financial reasons, but we still buy them when we can.
I finally saw my first movie in Blu-Ray over the weekend. Went to a friend's house and watch Casino Royale. Definitely a nice picture, but not worth me worrying about right now.
Maybe one day, but not now.
Plus, there's too much obscure/lost horror films that are only now finding their way to DVD. Will be a long time til they hit DVD. |

I have a few hundred dvd's and there are at least a few hundred more I'd like to get. I can't possibly see why I want this new Blu Ray. I even have to get a new player for it! |

I don't live near a Fry's but whenever I visit family, I stop by there to see if they have binders on sale but it's great to cut down on space but the caveat is the binders do add up. I decided to put all DVD's, Blu-ray, music CD's and video games all in binders. But it has been costly for these binders.
Vandal Savage: I hear ya. A lot of my friends talk about it a lot and we either think a) It's because we're married and can't go out, that we buy things to make us happy b) We just want to own stuff c) We have a bad spending/shopping habit d) Temporary happiness...we work all day, we are stressed and so we buy e) We are hardcore collectors or fans
But the latest thing now are the DVD box sets...the boxes. I am now putting all of them in my empty toy bins but those box sets start to add up. |

I have around 500 DVD's and have run out of space on the two fullsized 6ft bookshleves. A Binders seems to be the way to go, although when I add movies to them it'll be a pain to adjust the rest in the binder...i.e. move them down the line.
Think on this, I will. |

| You hit the nail on the head...I believe All 5 apply to me in some way or another...I will look into the binder thing, but as Hauser mentioned keeping them in order might present a problem...Must...Be...In..Order....

Mr. Savage | Ahh...Keeping them in order...oh the ones from Fry's have the steel rings, the $17 brown binders from target (that hold only 250) have steel rings. But yeah, I try to keep everything in order and end up having to reorder things. But plan in on a Sunday during a Football game and just sit back and reorder....boring,long but at least you don't have to do all the time.
Right now I'm deciding on the box sets and the boxes themselves. Toss them or keep them. Keeping them takes a lot of space but I don't know yet.... Like Buffy, Angel, Lost, etc. Those boxes take up space and I have so many box sets.... |
