This. Each has its moments and while I'd likely say Trek has more bad moments than Wars does keep in mind Trek also has more screen time than Wars does with 3 seasons of TOS, 2 seasons of TAS, 7 seasons of TNG, 7 for DS9, 7 for Voyager, 3 for ENT and 11 movies. While Wars has 6 movies, 1 animated movie two direct to TV movies, four animated series, and one god aweful holiday special. |

I like them both, but I am a star wars guy to the end.
I think these franchises are so different from one another that its not even a good comparison. It never made sense to me that there should be a rivalry between the two. The only thing they have in common is that both shows take place in outer space. Star trek is definitely more sober, subtle and realistic. There is a constant focus on human drama and examining our relationships as a people. Star wars is more slick and stylized, more hip. A grand epic, an over the top space opera in all its glory. It focuses more on our core inner traits, good, evil, the cycle of birth and death, with the flair and drama of greek mythology. Actually, Battlestar Gallactica and Star trek are good counter points, one is a utopian vision, the other is a nightmare future. Star Wars is better matched against Lord of the rings, both take place in a world so alien to our own, yet they face problems which we can identify with. Both deal with extreme good and evil, a war in which clashes between great armies and personal battles have an equally important effect on the outcome. Here is something, Since star wars happens a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, and Star Trek happens in our world, in the future, they could both co-exist in the same universe. |

I went with Star Trek, because it has more to say about us, and society as a whole.
Star Wars is great (well, the OT is anyway), but when you get right down to it, all it is is an escapist fantasy with not a whole lot to say about the world. Sure, Star Wars is grand, operatic, and incredibly fun to watch, but Star Trek can change the way you look at the world in a much more significant way. Plus, I think that at their best, Star Wars and Star Trek are about equal - but there's more great ST than SW to go around because of the massive amount of screen time. At their worse - and this is only my opinion, of course - Star Wars is much, much worse... or at the very least, the let down was greater.

The only thing they have in common is that both shows take place in outer space... I agree with everything you said. Despite the fact that it takes place in space, I don't even really consider SW to be science fiction. Midichlorians aside, SW is much more about magic and fantasy, and you're right, it has a lot more in common with LOTR than Star Trek. Any similiarities between SW and ST are superficial, and it's frankly embarrassing that there is any kind of fanboy "rivalry" (one of the more embarrassing moments of that terrible film of the same name, incidentally). I think I may actually prefer the Star Wars OT, and some of the better EU stuff (the Clone Wars stuff, for example, and some of the video games) - but as a whole, Star Trek is better done, imo.

Star Trek wins in quality and quantity
You have the classic original series Next Generation about half of the first ten movies and the new movie Star wars only has the original trilogy that was really good. plus, Star Trek came first too |

As far as the movies are concerned; Star Wars wins hands down IMO just for Empire' alone. But I would rather watch reruns of Star Trek TNG than any other Star Wars stuff besides the OT. Star Wars had the prequels and Star Trek had Enterprise starring Scott Bakula... so their even on that one. LOL. But IMO nothing will ever beat Lightsabers, so Star Wars wins I guess.
