Plus the fact it was a last minute decision to release it in theatres. It was supposed to have been on tv only. That's why there wasn't the usal promtions with Taco Bell, KFC, and Pepsi like the the other movies had. Like with the movie, McDonalds got on board at the last minute. Like I said, I liked it and can't wait till the series starts.

That's ridiculous.
I didn't go to see it this weekend simply because my daughter was misbehaving Friday night. She knows if she's good, then I'll take her. As for expectations, this was put in theaters as a lark. It's a 90 minute commerical for the new series and the fact that it made any money is amazing. I read that it cost $10 million to make so they've made a profit there. Not to mention that toy sales are through the roof and that's what this was all about in the first place. All these claims that this is proof Lucas/Star Wars is at an end are just stupid. Have some perspective. |

Whoah, 15 million and opened at #3.
Even Star Wars sites are calling it a disappointment if not a miserable failure. I wonder how much it cost to produce. Well, so much for the notion of Star Wars selling itself. And I wonder how this bodes for the animated Clone Wars TV series. Yahhh yahhh yuuuuuuuck. |

Tell you what, come back and talk to us when you've created an international franchise that grosses billions of dollars annually. At this point I'd say Lucas can do whatever he wants, it's his franchise. I also applaud him for focusing some energy on a movie and series designed to make young kids smile as opposed to pouring millions into yet another flick that makes 30 somethings all giddy with excitement. Say what you will but when I see my little nephews leave the theater talking all about star wars and begging us to go buy some new SW toys to play with in the backyard, I can't help but think Lucas has done a good thing.

The studio said that it did about what they expected. It's just the first 4 episodes of a TV show put on the big screen for fans to enjoy and get a little preview before the show comes out. I'm glad they did it at all, it was fun to see on the big screen. If they put Resolute on the big screen for the fans to see in full prior to going w/the mini-sodes do you think it would come in #1. Not a chance, but it would be awesome for the fans. That's what CW is.
the dismal box office means something about the public's interest in Star Wars, saying otherwise is dishonest. what that means is open to interpretation. but the Star Wars crowd knew it existed, and knew it was in theatres, so either they didn't see it, which reveals a lack of interest in it, or the Star Wars crowd isn't as large as everyone thinks and didn't fuel the overall success of the live-action movies. neither of which bode well for the continued interest in Star Wars IMO from the general public. and Marketing 101, the brand belongs to the customers. ask Coke. and perhaps Lucas. the egomaniac has believed audiences would eat up Star Wars no matter where he took it. I guess this movie proves he's wrong. |

since when is something that "makes" money on it's opening weekend a failure? I don't get that line of thinking, really. And #3, for a show that wasn't even intended to be released as a movie when it was initially created??? Pretty dang good bank. Like I said, which I think some people like to not consider, this was something that was even put out as a movie for the fans, that's it. Almost zero marketing went into this, it was practically an afterthought to release it this way and it STILL MAKES MONEY! some folks just hate Lucas regardless of what he does because he made a series and told a story he wanted to tell regardless of what ANYONE else thought it should be.

studios will always put the brightest face on it. fact is, the Star Wars movies made tons of money because they didn't appeal strictly to the Star Wars dedicated crowd. this movie did not because it only appealed to the SW's crowd. the rest of the movie going audience's interest was in the story set forth in the movies. with that completed, Star Wars is probably relegated to the SW crowd, and if the box office draw of this movie is any indication, that isn't much.
the dismal box office means something about the public's interest in Star Wars, saying otherwise is dishonest. what that means is open to interpretation. but the Star Wars crowd knew it existed, and knew it was in theatres, so either they didn't see it, which reveals a lack of interest in it, or the Star Wars crowd isn't as large as everyone thinks and didn't fuel the overall success of the live-action movies. neither of which bode well for the continued interest in Star Wars IMO from the general public. The strange thing is that, according to a TV Guide interview, George was deliberately trying to "win back" the OT Star Wars fans because he felt that Ep3 was too much of a downer to end the series on. Maybe this is just proof that Lucas has no clue what the hardcore Star Wars fans really like. Anyways, regardless of my problems with Lucas and his ego, I really liked Clone Wars... as a 90-minute toy commercial and a television pilot. It's definitely not better than the OT, but I do think it's better than all the prequels put together. So I can't wait to see more of this series. If you're wondering why I liked it, it's for the same reasons that I liked the old GI Joe cartoon: it was a fun way to showcase all the cool new toys. Especially the AT-TE, that's like the coolest Star Wars vehicle ever. So I'm not convincing myself that this was the greatest movie ever, but I had fun watching it and will buy the DVD first chance I get. |
