If you're coming to the beach, I would definitely recommend going to the Virginia Marine Science Museum as an option, which is not far from the beach at all, though it's not exactly within walking distance. They probably have a website out there with more information.

There's Seashore State Park, which has a lot of wooded trails, including those for bicycles. I haven't been there in years, but I always loved the place.

Ocean Breeze Water Park is also close to the Museum.

Those are just a few off the top of my head of things close to the beach, among others suitable for kids.
