"The Mauler light tank is the Joe team's default tank, and is currently the closest it has to an actual MBT. It has seen various slight upgrades and modifications over the years.
This Mauler has been refitted and repainted for winter warfare, with some of its original dark tan left intact to complement the arctic white. Its tracks give it dependable mobility in difficult terrain, including ice and snow. Heavy artilleryman Long-Range has made the transition to tanks, and drives the Mauler across sprawling tundra, deep snow, and icey valleys." Arctic Mauler by Magnus-L, on Flickr Arctic Mauler by Magnus-L, on Flickr Arctic Mauler by Magnus-L, on Flickr My winter/ arctic vehicles project continues with an entry that maybe wasn't so predictable. I've wanted to try a white/dark tan camo scheme for a while and the Mauler seemed like a natural vehicle to do this with. I'm really happy how the coloring came out. This has been a fun exercise, and I may build more winter variants of classic Joe and Cobra non arctic vehicles in the future. |

"Cobra's signature "tank" is not ideally suited for arctic operations, as its tracks do not extend the full length of its hull, and thus have limited mobility in deep snow. It is however, a vehicle that Cobra has in large supply, and it is inevitable that the Cobra legions operating in cold climates will be partially equipped with HISS tanks. With other vehicles better suited to mobility in arctic conditions, the HISS tanks that have been sent to the tundra wastes have been given a role where their limited agility is deemed somewhat less of a tactical handicap - they have been modified for the air defense role, with a turret mounted battery of four short range SAMs that can take out low flying helicopters and attack planes.
The hardy Air Defense HISS crew do the best they can with the vehicle they've been assigned, and console themselves in that what they lack in mobility, they make up for in incrementally better armor protection than their mounted comrades in WOLFs, Ice Sabres, and Paralyzers." Artic HISS by Magnus-L, on Flickr Artic HISS by Magnus-L, on Flickr Artic HISS rear by Magnus-L, on Flickr The HISS tank was the first ever Cobra vehicle I built eight years ago or so, and I still feel like my original design holds up fairly well. Dominator by Magnus-L, on Flickr
Dominator by Magnus-L, on Flickr Dominator by Magnus-L, on Flickr Getting ready to head out on a mission by Magnus-L, on Flickr "The Dominator has been described casually as a "snow tank" but it could be more accurately described as a modern armored car that excels in the armored reconnaissance role. Its six large wheels give it reasonable mobility even in snowy conditions and give it considerably more speed than a tracked configuration would offer. The Dominator has a crew of two - a gunner/commander and a driver. Its main weapon is a 90 mm cannon mounted in the turret, and considered effective against all but the heaviest armored vehicles. The Dominator also mounts three 7.62 machine guns - one mounted coaxially with the main gun and two in the hull firing forward. The effective accuracy of these hull mounted weapons can be questioned, but they are at the very least useful in providing suppressing covering fire when the Dominator runs into an enemy it can't defeat and needs to de-engage in a hurry." BattleForce 2000 is a subteam of G.I.Joe that gets a lot of flack from many serious G.I.Joe fans, in part because it incorporated a combining base feature that never quite worked very well. My version does not try to replicate this flawed gimmick, I just tried to recreate the basic shape of the original (minus the silly side skis), and adding a much needed driver's position in the hull. I'm especially happy with the angled shaping on the glacis on the front of the vehicle. The Dominator was my favorite BF2000 vehicle (as well as one of my favorite of the arctic Joe vehicles overall). For all of BF 2000's limitations, it had some cool elements, and I'll likely have a go at other vehicles in this subteam eventually, and perhaps even attempt some kind of improved "modular mobile base" feature in other vehicles. For now, the Dominator takes its place in the ranks of my Joe team's winter/arctic forces. |

So this is a bit of a first for me - the Ice Dagger marks the first of my G.I.Joe builds that take their inspiration from a toy from the lesser know and more recent "Valor vs Venom" line, rather than the "A Real American Hero" line that I'm most familiar with.
I will likely get to a few more of these later-era vehicles, as I now realize that some of them are really quite nice, but I don't plan to build most of them. Ice Dagger by Magnus-L, on Flickr Front view by Magnus-L, on Flickr Gunner and Commander hatches open by Magnus-L, on Flickr Rear by Magnus-L, on Flickr Troop compartment interior by Magnus-L, on Flickr The Ice Dagger is basically a upsized skimobile and it ended up a little larger than I expected, in part because of the canopy I ended up using. I've built a good number of winter vehicles for the Joes, but they were still missing a dedicated troop transport, and with a little modification to the rear compartment, the Ice Dagger fit the bill nicely. I'm especially happy with the hatches I designed for the two crew members in front, which fold outwards and the third hatch behind the MG. My Arctic building spree is nearing its end, but I'm not quite done yet. I have at least one more vehicle on its way in winter colors. |

"Cobra has developed increasingly sophisticated air defense measures to keep up with the growing threat of G.I.Joe air power. The Adder provides self-propelled long-range surface-to-air defense, with a pair of missiles that can fly high, far, and fast. Its six rugged wheels give it good mobility, and allow it to operate quite capably off road. The Adder is manned by two crewmen sitting side by side in a blast-proof cockpit, and carries a remote operated machine gun for self defense"

Adder in white looks great, and absolutely love the Ice Dagger.

Thank you so much. The Ice Dagger has opened my eyes to the potential of the post ARAH era hardware.

"G.I. Joe finally have a dedicated attack helicopter, capable of close air support, recon, tank-killing, and even hunting other helicopters. The Dragonfly carries a 7.62mm minigun and 40mm automatic grenade launcher in a chin turret, as well as a forward firing, vertically pivoting 25mm autocannon attached to the port side skid. A typical full warload comprises of four long -range antiarmor missiles and two short-range air-to-air missiles under the wings, but depending on mission requirements, unguided rockets and other weapons can also be carried. The crew sits in tandem, with the pilot in rear and gunner in the front, although either crewmen can fly the helicopter, as needed.
Other attack helicopters can carry more heavy firepower, but the Dragonfly offers supreme agility, speed, and range, making it ideal for special operations needs." Dragonfly by Magnus-L, on Flickr Cockpit open by Magnus-L, on Flickr Tail with NOTAR system by Magnus-L, on Flickr This was an early classic Joe vehicle, and I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to build it. The Dragonfly is heavily inspired by the AH-1 Cobra gunship, with some notable modifications - the most important of which was the absence of a tail rotor without any obvious alternative method of keeping the helicopter under control. I considered adding a conventional tail rotor, but went instead with a tail-mounted NOTAR style jet to keep it the experimental vibe. |
