I'm curious to know what some of you think about the canonicity (is that even a word?) of Kreo stuff. Obviously, virtually all of the Kreons, and most of the sets starting with year two are based on classic 80s characters and vehicles, but what of the essentially "new" stuff - the Battleship recolors, etc? By definition, if Hasbro makes it, it's automatically canon, no?
So, fiction-wise, do you consider things like the Cobra Armored Car automatically a piece of hardware essential to Cobra's efforts? And as such, would you easily allow the Battleship Mine Stryker to be shoehorned into the Joeverse as a Joe "recolor"? How would you feel if Hasbro made a version of these vehicles in the 4" line - sort of reversing the translation? I'm a fan of these concepts, and just wonder what you guys think. Obviously, I'm having fun translating all the old, classic stuff into Legos, but I like to imagine new things, too, which is why you'll occasionally see stuff like that in my product line. I've pretty much only done recolors of smaller sets, but I have some ideas for the future, including some completely original stuff "in the style of" 80s Joe. Maybe I just have an overactive imagination.

I definitely think of Kre-O as being its own unique reboot of the canon. So if there was a Kre-O GI Joe comic from IDW (and there totally should be), and they didn't include the Cobra Armored Car, I'd be disappointed.
But, having said that, I seriously judge the things Kre-O has put out that share a name with a previous Joe toy, but don't evoke it. The VAMP and Snake Armor don't really do it for me. The Dragonfly is also on that list. So, new stuff I'm okay with. Homages to old vehicles I'm okay with. But new stuff with an old name is a big "no thanks". |
