The USAF and Air Force reserve have fighter wings in various parts of the country that can intercept unknown aircraft. The time to “scramble” fighters (F-15 or F-16) usually takes 5–10 minutes until they are airborne.
Ace and company were already airborne. We don't know where Springfield is but if past battles and evacuations are any indication, I think it might be Jersey. I used to think it was in California but Larry said in a conversation with me, no it is East coast. If that is so, then the Aspids probably had a short flight to begin with. the Joes probably told the USAF to stand down since Ace Dogfight and Slipstream were nearby. It takes time to identify, then assess, if these birds were threats or not. Too much time. The AF has failed to stop two planes (aircraft) from flying into the White House. A Cessna in 94, and a helicopter in 1974. Flight 93, was purportedly targeting the White House. Back when Cobra Island was a country, Cobra may have had some rights negotiated with the U.S. to fly in and out of the country. Remember they had a whole parade of lawyers ready to go when they created the island. However in this case I think it was just that they were not that far away to begin with. Springfield NJ is 24 miles away. Aspid flies at...oh lets say...196 MPH same as a Chinook.

The route they took had to take them near Springfield, because they encountered the Dreadnoks (who had just come from Cobra HQ and trashed a nearby Air Force base - unnamed, unfortunately). I once did a Google Map search from Staten Island to Malibu and tried to identify nearby AF bases in the process. I think I had decided that Springfield was probably in Pennsylvania... But this new info might change my mind. Last edited by seaneley; 11-20-2019 at 12:37 PM.. |

This was always intriguing to me. In RAH #10, when Snake Eyes, Scarlett and Zap escaped Springfield, the Cobra pilot was shocked that they wanted to go to New York. He acted like Springfield was pretty far from the Big Apple. However, in #5, the Cobra courier walked from Cobra HQ to New York City after "many hours."

But this new info might change my mind. The noks trashed McGuire. It is where Ace took off from and ran into Wild Weasel as well in 34. The original Pit had no airfield so they used McGuire as a their airfield. The C-130, Skystrikers, and Dragonflys were all kept there. Even a VAMP or two Way back in issue 14, Cobra lured the Joes in to capture ScarFace at a nice little town called Springfield, in Vermont. This may or may not have been the same Springfield in issue 10. However I think Scarlett would have remembered that Springfield and she was the one in the APC suggesting that they go in "in civvies" into Springfield Vermont. I doubt that after being in captivity there , she would have suggested they do that again.

I see you are correct. The second AF base was not named in the issue. There are currently two AFB that have F-15's that may have been the one. Langley AFB in Virginia and Seymour Johnson AFB in NC. Now back then who knows, they could have been there for an air show or something Based (ha) on taking the highway it could be one of three bases: Dover Bolling Andrews all three are on the 42 hour drive to Malibu from Fort Wadsworth. https://twitter.com/skinnyjoefan/sta...262237185?s=20
