As such, I give cars a wide berth and stick to the sides, whether it's right or not.

That way, he or she sees that I see them, and that I'm clearly not trying to cross in front of them, so they don't have to worry about braking or slowing down on my account. If there's nobody else crossing, they can keep driving and I don't have to make that much of a course correction to the buildings door (or to my car) |

That's how I was raised  Also raised to know that bikes belong on the sidewalk and you ride them towards oncoming traffic so you can SEE the cars that could hit you (If they drove up on to the sidewalk) but this is for another discussion |
