Both eBay and Paypal cannot be trusted. I still shop on eBay simply because alot of the items I want for my collection cannot be found anywhere else, but I am extremely careful these days. Both eBay and Paypal have screwed me over many times over the past 8 years or so resulting in thousands of dollars lost. If a seller screws me over, eBay will do little to nothing to help me out. And as for Paypal, they are criminals as well. Several years ago I decided to sell my comic book collection on eBay. I had never used Paypal before but I thought it would be a good way to collect payments for all of the comic book auctions I would be launching. I had a fairly new eBay account, but I went ahead and launched over a hundred auctions for the many comic books I was selling. Everything went smoothly up until just after the very last auction ended. One of the winners of one of my auctions got nervous over my fairly low feedback rating and complained to eBay only two days after the auction ended. With no evidence whatsoever to show that I was up to no good, eBay closed my account for no reason whatsoever. I was now "no longer a registered user" only a day or two after my last auction ended. I did nothing wrong whatsoever, but eBay closed down my account simply because one of the winners of one of my auctions got nervous over my fairly new account and fairly low feedback rating. At this point in time, dozens of my customers had already paid for their auctions and their packages had been shipped out. When some of those customers saw that my eBay account had been closed down, they all began to panic and try to get their money back through Paypal. One mistake I made was to not get tracking numbers for all of the packages I shipped out, therefore I was not able to prove to Paypal that all of the packages had indeed shipped. I went as far as to fax them copies of my debit reciepts from the post office showing the many packages that I used my debit card to pay for the shipping but that was not good enough. They froze my Paypal account as most of my customers began to demand their money back from Paypal. Paypal was more than happy to start refunding the money back to nearly all of my customers. Eventually my customers packages began to arrive at their destinations. Some of my customers were honest enough to pay for their comics when they realized I was not out to cheat them, but most of them claimed they never recieved anything and got free and valuable comics. Most of the money I made through my auctions was refunded back to the dishonest customers who basically stole my comic books because they knew there was no way I could prove that I actually sent them their eBay winnings. What little money that was left in my Paypal account after Paypal gave away most of it to crooked customers was frozen for a year. Finally, a year later, they un-froze that small amount of money that was left, transfered it to my bank account, and closed my Paypal account for good. I basically gave away my childhood comic collection and paid several hundred dollars of my own money to ship the comics to worthless, dishonest eBay users. Both eBay and Paypal jumped the gun and did not give me even the slightest chance to make good on my auctions. EBay still took a huge chunk of my money for the auctions I ran even though they closed my account right after my last auction ended. Out of the several thousand dollars I made from those auctions, I think I may have actually collected only 2 or 3 hundred dollars after Paypal gave away all of my money to the dishonest customers who all recieved what they won from me. Out of the dozens of packages I shipped out, not a single one was returned to me. My faith in humankind was badly shaken after that. When I thought of all of the people who stole from me without thinking twice about it really made me wonder what this world was coming to. Both eBay and Paypal did nothing to help me, if fact, they went out of their way to make sure they could screw me over as much as possible. If eBay and Paypal burned down and all of their employees became unemployed, I would not feel for them at all.

I have been buying and selling on ebay and using paypal now since 2001, and have moved a couple of thousand dollars worth between the two. Probably about $500 over the last six months.I tend to be very careful when buying, and I am very specific when selling. I only accept paypal.
The only trouble I have ever had has been from buyers. I have had to file unpaid strikes against 10 people so far. The UK mail service is another factor entirely. Not going into that here, because the swearing filter would go into meltdown. |

I love eBay, but I've taken the time to both read and understand the policies involved with being a buyer and seller. In hundreds of transactions, I've had only one problem, and I managed to get that resolved very quickly.

Ebay certainly isn't perfect, but it is a necessary evil for those of us that need to sell items and don't have access to our own web sites or have the time to follow up sales and trades on message boards. I have problems all the time. Especially with newer users.

I've been a member of Ebay since '98 and in those (near) ten years I've only had 2 transactions that were quasi-bad, one as a seller and one as a buyer.
