The Avs, baby!! The game tonight was awesome. Too bad we let Drury go, he was always a Red Wing killer. You guys are very lucky to have him. The good news is Forsberg is back in burgundy and lookin' like his old-self again.

I've been a Penguins fan all of my life. I finally have something to cheer about since the days of Lemieux, Jagr, and Francis.
LETS GO PENS!!! On another note I've been a Celtic's fan all of my life as well and I now have something to cheer about since the days of Bird, McHale, and Parrish. Now if only my Yankees can get back on top. This is a long shot and I might be stretching it, but I hope someday my Dolphins return to football glory. |

I live in New York City, but for some reason my dad grew up as a Celtics fan. So growing up we watched them on TV anytime they played a local team like the Knicks or Nets. That was the only time I watched NBA basketball. If the Knicks or Nets were playing someone else we didn't watch the games.
The better story is how I became a Dolphins fan living in NYC. My dad is a Jets fan, but I grew up watching baseball and playing baseball because my dad played baseball right up until he signed up for the Navy. He supposedly received a letter in the mail to try out for the Yankees in Florida for Spring Training sometime in 1969 or so. The letter came a few days before he joined the Navy, but his mom kept it from him and never told him until years later. In those days the players didn't make millions like they do now, so I guess his mom didn't want him to "throw his life away" playing a silly sport. Well since he missed out on his chance he decided to push me and my brother hard into playing, which after awhile made us hate the sport and start resenting him. One day in 1982 he had on the Jets vs. Dolphins playoff game. This was the first time I remember watching football. All I could remember is the Dolphins running up and down the field with the ball, especially with the help of Jets QB Richard Todd tossing interceptions. My dad was yelling and screaming as he always does, so from that day forward I was a Dolphins fan to go against my dad. I also started to root for the Mets in the 80's to piss him off even more until we reconciled. What can I say I was a Gary Carter fan in those days. In the late 70's and early 80's though I liked Bucky Dent when he was a Yankee. Now it's Yankees all the way baby!!! Last edited by Scoop; 04-10-2008 at 03:20 AM.. |

The Yankees and Mets biggest rivals. For respect of you and the team you like i won't spend a whole post bashing New York. But i can definitely understand following a team that someone else wouldn't expect you too...

Oh and to explain why I'm a Penguins fan from New York City, it's because my dad never watched a game of hockey in his life before I got into it. I saw Mario Lemieux play and I was hooked.
My dad never liked it, so I took up playing it as well. I actually found out the hard way that I sucked as a regular player. So my friend's older cousins decided to put me in goal for fun so they could shoot at me and kill me. They were very surprised when I took to it like I was a natural and I excelled at it. I played for a few years in leagues on Long Island. I was even scouted by the Long Island Jawz roller hockey team that played one season in the RHI at Nassau Coliseum where the Islanders play. Unfortunately I never made those try outs due to an injury and surgery. I haven't played goalie since my surgery, but when I was healthy again I started to play left wing, which I got better at as time went on, but never excelled at any position like goalie ever again. Now that I'm getting older I miss playing hockey, especially goalie. I want to pick it up again but I need new goalie equipment and it's expensive. I have new player equipment that I've hardly used. Maybe I should trade it in for goalie equipment. |

That was awful nice of your friends to put you in as goalie so they could hit pucks at you. At least you found out you were good at it and seemed to find something you liked. Unfortunately for you, you had an injury, but at least you got to play and you still get to, just not the position you were wanting. My wife is a huge hockey fan and she has told me several times how expensive the gear is. But hey, you only live once and i say if you want to do it, you shouldn't hold back. I used to not like hockey. I used to watch the ends of the games waiting for the baseball games to start. Usually hockey was still going or in overtime so i had to wait until it was over. I guess that is how i started to like it. So after a while i would tune in to watch entire games and then catch the baseball game afterwards...Now i like to watch it with my wife whenever we have time, which hasn't been alot this season...
