My brother is trying to install a simple wall mounted shelf. Something similar to this:
Now, the problem is, he's using a stud finder, and every stud he finds also lights up the AC light. He lives in an old building, so chances are there is probably a spiderweb of old wiring. Obviously he doesn't want to get electrocuted or start a fire when he's trying to screw in this shelf bracket. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what he can do, short of opening up the walls? Because every stud seems to have wiring. Last edited by pud333; 04-07-2010 at 02:33 PM.. |

How much weight is he going to put on the shelf?
If it's not much weight, you don't have to screw into the stud. Use drywall anchors and find a spot that's clear. Should work just fine. |

Is it a cheaper stud finder? Sometimes I have trouble locating studs with a run of the mill finder. Everything lights up, then nothing. So on and so forth.
That aside, stick to the center of the stud and you should be fine. The wiring will either run along side the stud or through them via a hole that was drilled. Either way, hitting the wiring shouldn't be a major issue as long as you're careful. |

Not a heck of a lot of weight. But he might want to put some books on or something. I'll let him know though. |

is there electric anywhere on the wall?
outlets switches...is it an interior wall...if its an interior wall on the opposite side is there any electric on the wall? is the shelf going up high or close to the ground wires TYPICALLY run lateral at the level of the outlet if there is one OR vertical in line with the outlet so unless you are mounting in line with an outlet the chances of you hitting a wire are remote |
