My Grandfather was at Iwo Jima on the day of the landing in Feb 1945 and for 22 days after. At which time he was wounded by a a grenade and shipped for home via a naval hospital in San Francisco. The pictures are direct copies of the original photos. They were given to him by Joe Rosenthal. I decide to upload these pics to my computer and so to the tank. I wanted to share the pictures I grew up with. Some of these pics might not be for everyone. Some are disturbing. So please use your disgression.... and now I present to you the greatest Generation.
Please see below for the remaining pics. Last edited by killerloon; 04-16-2010 at 10:38 PM.. |

Is your grandfather still alive?
I'm not trying to start something, but I wonder how he feels about that pic of the Japanese soldier now? You just hear stories of former enemies feeling different after so many years. More respect and kinship than fear and hatred I suppose. I would never know.

Unfortunately he pasted 2 years ago. He was a typical Marine and was proud of what he did over there. He always told the story about that pic and never really convaied any remorse. I sometimes wonder myself how he truly felt.
This grandfather was at Iwo Jima. My other grandfather was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Thats another post. There are some other disturbing pics that are apart of these pics that I took down. If anyone feels that they would like to see them please pm me with your email address and Ill be more than happy to send them to you. Again they are pretty disturbing.
