Is anyone really surprised?
It kinda serves Conan right for getting involved with NBC and their decades worth of screwing people when it comes to the Tonight show correct? None of us should be surprised about what is going on They did it (screwed over) to: Arsenio Hall, David Letterman, Ed McMahon, joan Rivers and the list I am certain goes on and on. |

There is also a stipulation in Conan's contract that if he is moved in anyway or fashion from the tonight show including the time slot he would be rewarded in upwards of 40 million dollars for the violation.
The problem is not necessarily Leno taking on the news but him being a poor lead into people watching the news. 10 pm use to be special with the likes of ER and Hill Street Blues that kept people watching still even when the news came on at 11 pm. With Leno being ho-hum, the late night format does not work at 10 pm so people watch elsewhere on different channels and ultimately the local news affiliates get screwed. I do not necessarily believe it is just Leno as I think if you put anybody into that time slot for a nightly show the tradeoff is not good for anybody. The audiences who watch during primetime are a hell of lot different than the audiences that watch late night shows. 12:30 seems to be the time when things tail off for most people and two talk shows by that time is too much for many. People want drama (primetime) up and through the news and then they want to relax with a good talk show before they go to sleep. NBC just wants to get cheap but the format they currently have works a hell of lot better during midday or early evening rather than late night. |

FOX does not have their own news studios so they pay NBC to use their studios and anchors to produce the FOX news at 10.Basically FOX subcontracts their news from NBC.

Fox Television Stations and NBC Local Media, the station division of NBC Universal, announced the formation of a partnership that will allow Fox-owned stations and NBC-owned stations to pool their news resources. The partnership is first being tested in the Philadelphia market, where Fox owns WTXF-TV and NBC operates WCAU-TV. The two stations are the first network affiliates in the nation to undertake the plan as an effective way to deal with rising in costs in news operations.
With the ABC/UPN partnership, they would share the building and you would have two master control operators (They physically control what goes on the air) both controlling a different station but sitting in the same room. While the NBC/PAX partnership had two different stations but PAX would air the local NBC news at 11pm What's going on here is that two networks are using their resources together, not Fox renting from NBC |

I seem to remember Leno announcing his retirement awhile ago, which is why NBC had to lock up Conan with a date to take over the Tonight Show, so they wouldn't run the risk of losing him.
I guess Leno decided he didn't want to retire and NBC had to give him his own show and earlier slot so he wouldn't potentially go to a competitor. Basically, Leno pulled a Brett Favre and didn't retire when he said he would.

Heard that a lil bit ago, not too shocking because Leno has pull somewhere. Leno is funny in small 30-second doses once every week or so. But Conan has talent? Where? His left ass cheek?
For the record, I am sooo not a fan of his on his old show and his new show. But a joke or 2 is fine. Conan just rubs me the wrong way from seeing him and hearing him. |

Basically, Leno pulled a Brett Favre and didn't retire when he said he would. But who cares if the guy changes his mind? What cracks me up is when people act like they never change their minds and that if anyone else does they're not allowed to. Imagine if someone tried to place those types of limits on you.. From what I see, Conan O'Brien sucks in that slot. To me, Conan was always a fringe player anyway, stuck in late, late night. But he got the job by default, which is crap. Who says just because you put time in you're entitled to anything? Conan O'Brien has his own brand of humor and I love the guy, but I don't think that it's a brand that's all together marketable to the masses. For what it's worth, I think that Craig Ferguson is the funniest of all the hosts right now. Once he takes the reigns from Letterman, CBS is going to dominate that slot for a long time.. |
