Hey everyone, as some of y'all may know, my father-in-law just passed away. Having gotten over the grief today (kinda had to, had to go to work), I'm faced with a dilemma. We're being offered his old house in Baltimore, MD. Here's a side by side:
Current: Located in Trenton, NJ
Possible: Located in Baltimore, MD
Current: Expenses - $700/month, including water/sewage
Possible: Expenses - free, including electricity, water/sewage, property taxes, trash removal, parking spot
Current: Cost of living - higher
Possible: Cost of living - lower
Current: Family - my mom and dad, grandfather
Possible: her mom and new husband (down the line when they move from Ireland), cousins and aunt
Current: Friends - my co-workers, 10+ y/o friend from HS
Possible: Friends - none that I would know, but one or 2 that she knows
Current: Work - I temp with Adecco, same job for 3 years SOLID. SAME LOCATION.
Possible: Work - Unknown, whatever Adecco has available (will call tomorrow AM)
Current: Moving costs - NONE!
Possible: Moving costs - Yes...unfortunately...
So, is the economy strong enough where I will find CSR work (obviously not at the same pay, but still...) in Baltimore? I would also be abandoning my parents until they get old enough for us to HAVE TO move back to NJ to take care of them.

if you can find the work sounds like a solid idea! but otherwise might be bad if not but paying no rent your costs will offset its hard telling

Well...thats def alot to consider. If you're close with your friends and family and have solid work--man I wouldnt go anywhere. We're in a recession and there are just too many variables. Thats just me though.
If you think its time for a change, you're a kinda cat that wont have problems making some new friends and being away from your old ones and family...and you are SURE that you will have a solid paycheck every week doing what you like...then go for it.
For me though? We catch alot of crap...I like NJ, I'd like it alot more if the job market would get a bit better...but overall I think its a nice place to live and a great place to be from. I would stay. Then again, if your living for free and you are absolutely 100% sure its gonna stay that way??...I think it comes down to the move itself and leaving friends behind.
What is CSR by the way?

If it were me, I'd stay where you are.
Costs are higher to pay where you are, but the costs of moving, possible time out of work, and lack of contacts would (IMHO) far outweigh that.

The economy is tough right now and Baltimore isn't exactly the Major Metropolis it once was. I'd first ensure that you're able to secure employment with your company or with another before making the move. The last thing you'd want to be is stuck in a new town unemployed.

As for friends, HA! I'm very anti-social, despite what some board members here think of me.
I'm being greedy with this, but family is HUGE with me. I know I'll take care of my folks when they need it and have to move back, but for now I'd leave 2 very good friends that cannot follow suit. I know her family is in MD and WV, but mine is here. Donna...moved here. I dunno if I can do it.
Financially it sounds like a real win, but even with a possible new job over there...and a rent free, utility free house, I would be alone...
