My wife and I went to Walmart about an hour ago to get a few things before the blizzard like conditions (snow, high winds, and and -23 windchill) set in. As we were leaving there was a man standing at the corner holding a sign that read "Hard times... Please help me and my dog..." I looked down to see a mutt of some kind (kinda looked like Mad Max's dog). My heart stopped. I felt so bad for this guy and his dog (more his dog than him). I drove on with my wife in tears and me on the brink. At this point there was nothing I could do. I had no cash only plastic. We got home and it was all we could think about. In this day and age people scare me. He could have been a murderer or a con man. I didnt want his dog around mine in case it had parvo or some other K-9 illness. I had the thought of putting him in the shed with the space heaters. At least he would have had shelter and warmth.
Finally I grabbed my coat and jumped in the car. Back to walmart I went. When I got there he was gone. I searched around the parking lot and behind the store but they were nowhere to be found.
It made me feel better to see that they were gone. Hopefully someone else took pitty upon them and helped them out. My mother said "maybe the police took him to the homeless shelter, which I hope is not the case cause I'm not to sure they would allow his dog, and probably send the poor pooch to the animal shelter. That alone saddens me. That dog may be the only thing that man has left in this world and they want to separate them and the way I look at it 4 legged friend are just as good (usually better than) 2 legged friends, and better than no friends at all.
If you were faced with this delima what would you do.

I think you did the right thing. You went back, you tried to help. I think that it would have been a disservice to your wife (and other family members?) to take him home. It is difficult to know who's "for real" and who's not, and there are a lot of scammers out there. This guy could have been a crazy murderer and you could have put your family in harm's way had you taken him home. But your actions showed that you were thinking of others. You had genuine concern for someone and tried to help. If it were me, I would likely have done the same thing. I might have taken my family home first then went back with a coat and an offer to take him to a shelter.

For about a year there was a homeless man (and his dog) living in a ship yard that I was working in. We bought him coffee and lunch all the time, let him use our mobile phone to call family he had in california. We fed him and gave him clothes and he was always appreciative of what we did. One day he just left....it was very sad he left the dog behind and my partner took her in.

i agree, its a shame though that people would scam something like that, kinda like the old saying: "take one person to mess it up for the rest" i would have done the same, but it is good that he was gone, like you said, maybe somebody took him in, and it would suck if he was separated from his dog, i know i couldnt be.

Man life is a cruel cruel thing.
I would have asked the guy if he needed a lift to a shelter and gave him some money and buy him a meal.
I hope that guys is okay with his dog.
Dogs will stick with you thru hell and back.
God bless that guy and his buddy.

You did the right thing... but I wouldn't have took him home. Maybe given him a few bucks or something if I had it.
It sucks but, we cant always help everyone we would like to..

In southern california, we have excellent weather about 90% of the time and the homeless problem is everywhere. Weatherwise, there isnt a hardship, and the probability of one of the homeless just being a con person (yes, the women are good at it too) is really high. And yes, it is very dangerous to help people. So you do what you can and what feels right and that is all you do.
I have stopped on more than a few occasions and offered a gift card to a fast food place, or even handed a bag of food from McD's to a person and had it declined. I have been in the position to give a person a job and they have laughed. I even came back with a job descripotion and an application and they just walked away. It has created a cynical side to me that I don't like.
My outlook is this: I have a family and my first responsibility is to them. I do volunteer work and that benefits a local animal rescue, and a battered women and children's agency. Beyond that, it is enough.
The fact that you and your wife are compassionate people is enough to make a difference in ways you arent aware of. You spread good kharma just by being good people.

def. a hard choice and I think in the end you made the right choice and you went back as well to try n help so however you look at it you did the right thing.
It really is a scary world out there now a days and you never know who someone is or what they are capable of.
At least you know your heart was in the right place. Hopefully he found some warmth/shelter and a hot meal for him and his pooch.
Quatermaine said it though... family is definitely a persons first responsibility. So just know that you did right by them.
Quatermaine I was in Temecula back in May. Nice place!
In the end, you'll see my name carved in stone...

You just have to adopt the mentality everyone else does to justify not helping someone in need, that he could have been a killer or a rapist or a baby-toucher. It helps you get through the day.
