My faith, conviction and relationship with Jesus.
* I find it hard to answer a question like that AND stay within the boundaries the mods have set about discussing topics of this nature. So this is my best attempt of trying to do both.* Last edited by Outbackk; 01-05-2010 at 11:59 AM.. |

People aren't as interesting as they think. Like...okay, your uncle touched you as a kid and now you touch other kids and beat on your family to vent your childhood rage. What if you had a healthier upbringing? You'd be a teacher or a firefighter? You'd be a stay-at-home parent? A mailman? Maybe, but so what? What's so great about playing the flute or rock-climbing?
I guess I'm asking, why do we feel the need to be recognized for something? Labeled as something? Why can't we just be and not look for any hidden meaning or try to put a value on our lives? most people need to start with identifying before they can start an actual identity. But sometimes that's all they can do. It can be exhausting or it can take a lifetime... sometimes they never see that yes, a path took them there... but that you don't need a path to keep going. so once their path ends... they're all "oh... okay here I am." kinda like after the 'Matrix'... more people started emulating certain aspects of the film... be it wardrobe or philosophy... but that's all they did. how many of them turned around and applied that same philosophy on the film's origins which would lead them to Morrison's "Invisibles" ... and then through Morrison they would find Chaos Magick which has some roots in Gnosticism which when traced forward on another path you find the origins of Christianity... and then all your answers start getting questioned. and that's just a bare basic example that comes to mind. I don't condone pure Chaos Magick nor do I condone organized religion. even Gnosticism has some holes in it. I don't let things define me but I do use them to find definitions. besides your question begs to define a bit of YOU don't you think?

People who have learned to shut off their egos are called Enlightened and most of them don't stay around long after they manage it. But I agree with your point, I wish I could be at the level to not care if life has value or not. My quest is to prove that we live in a world where truly anything is possible, if we just know how to make it happen.

I've had alot of bumps in the road in life. After being knocked down, I learned that its important to regroup, get up and fight harder.

I don't know that you can really say what defines yourself until much later in life. What defines you at 20 is far different from what defines you at 30 etc...
That being said, I think one is defined by their character. Not by events from the past, but the decisions made by reflecting on the events. Be defined by your own achievements and not by the failures of someone else. THIS GET OUT OF MY HEAD PEOPLE!!!! LOL seriously though....the one quality that I appreciate about myself is that I try to learn from every conversation, every experience mine or others that I have or am subjected to. Learn what? How to handle myself to "try" to be the best person that I can be...firstly for myself, secondly for my family, third for my friends, and lastly for the rest of the world. And...religion (fear of god or hell) has no bearing on me wanting to do the right thing. I am self-aware of what is right or wrong for everyone involved....or try to be.

I would have to say my son, his birth was the most definitive moment in my life. Everything I do I do for him. Since his birth I think long and hard about the consequence of any action I may take before I take it. Since he came into the world I always wear my seat belt and make sure any ladder or scaffolding that I set up at work is as safe as possible, because I cant stand the thought of something happening to me and him growing up all screwy without a father. I never thought it was possible to love someone so much. He has made me a new man, so he defines me.

A few things I guess...
First, upbringing was good, parents are still together, they instilled the values of education and hard work, though I admit I didn't always listen to them on that during high school. Got my act together in the last couple of years, went on to a really good university up here, often listed as the number 1 in Canada, lol, which I will admit has defined me a little bit as well, being in the "old boys club" for that particular school, plus what I studied, art, which has always been sort of a defining aspect of me as well. Being an officer in the navy has also defined my life quite a bit, as I've always been interested in the military, ever since I got my first GI Joe. I'm an avid reader (especially of military/current events non-fiction, history (especially 20th century military history and classical Roman period stuff), science fiction and the "classic" novels) , a "devout" atheist (or maybe an agnostic, depending on what definition people are using), well-travelled, well involved in health and working out while still having problems maintaining my weight (lol), love to collect (especially GI Joes), play guitar and prefer classic, indie-style, and punk rock, as well as jazz and big band type music, and I love movies and playing videogames. I've got a close-knit group of friends and while I'm a pretty friendly guy, I don't often see the need to make new "good" friends, although it happens, especially with me being in the military, lol. I'm lucky to have a beautiful, fit blonde girlfriend (although despite my sometimes problems with weight, haven't had serious problems dating since about my senior year in high school) who is now my commonlaw wife and we just bought a great new house together. No plans for kids, but we both love dogs (though we won't be getting one until I get back from my deployment next year). I like to get my drink on every now and then but nothing like in my uni years, and I also enjoy a nice cigar once in a while. Not into drugs but I think legalization is the way to go. Finally, as far as other politics go, I'd probably be defined as a "liberal" by an American but as a "conservative" by many Canadians, but I don't define myself as either - life is just too complicated to be as black and white as some seem to think. That's probably what defines me in a nutshell. ;)
