Does anybody know how the Warrant Officer promotions work? Can you be promoted to a W01 from an E-9 SMA? Can you be promoted from a CW5 to a 2LT?
I have searched the internet and I can't find any information regarding these two questions. So I turned to the 'Tank. I figure there's a wealth of information here and somebody should know the answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

There's nothing preventing an SMA from going to Warrant Officer Candidate School, though, as strange as an SMA going warrant sounds. In the Army, anybody E-5 and above can apply for acceptance into Warrant Officer Career College. As for a warrant officer becoming a "regular" commissioned officer, the Navy and the Marines have a program that allows warrant officers and experienced NCOs (even those without college or university degrees) to become what are called "limited-duty officers" (LDOs). LDOs hold the same ranks and pay grades as their peers who graduated from NROTC, Officer Candidate School, or the US Naval Academy, but they are recognised primarily as technical leaders within their own occupational specialties. Also, there's a "glass ceiling" for LDOs in terms of career advancement, in that they rarely ever reach O-6. The Army doesn't have a similar program, but conceivably, an Army warrant officer with a bachelor's degree can indirectly become a "regular" commissioned officer by fulfilling the 6 year WO service obligation and then applying to Officer Candidate School (as long as he/she still meets the age limit requirements... although most ex-warrant officers would probably be in their early 30s and would require a waiver to attend OCS). |

In the Army, every WO I ever met was a pretty cool cat, and seemed happy where they were at.
I would think that deciding to pursue being a WO, or a Commissioned Officer to be a decision that one would make early on in their enlisted career. Most likely as a JrNCO. I can't imagine someone who has put in the time to build a career and achieve the rank of Sergeant Major, much less one that has been appointed SMA, suddenly deciding to choose that path, but you never know.

Being such a unique position, I really can't see an SMA wanting to be anything but the SMA.
That's a huge honor being the SMA.
