Well last night I decided after going to WM and the SW Clone War Turbo Tank sold out I wanted to hunt for one. Well I finally found a WM that just got 5 in stock. I picked one up and was happy with my purchase and headed home.
On my way home there is an old Hill's Department Store that has sat vacant for many years. You can still see the labal scar on the sign and can make out the Hill's letters. Anyway I pulled into the parking lot for a minute to reminisce about the good ol' days at Hill's. I just thought about how many years ago we (joe collectors) were going into that cool store with our parents hoping to find the newest G.I. Joe's, M.A.S.K, Thundercats, Transformers. Ahh good times indeed. |

The Hill's store here was originally a Gold Circle. I have many fond childhood memories of both stores. When the Gold Circle was going out of business they got down to everything 75% off. I got $20.00 for my birthday one year and bought almost the whole collection of those futuristic knight guys with the hologram shields, I cant remember what those guys were called though.

The good old days! Before there was nothing but wal mart and Target! I used to go to the Hills store in Richmond VA. It turned into a K mart and Now it's a wal mart super center. I remember buying Joes from so many cool retail chains that are long gone. Woolworths,GC Murphy's,Roses,Ames,Bradlee's and Jamesway just to name a few. That's not even counting all the drug and toy stores that used to sell Joes back then. Cool thread.

Wow, I grew up in Wellsville Ohio (near East Liverpool) and Hills was the end all of stores growing up. I remember when they had an entire aisle, top to bottom, of nothing but Joes.
Someone, somewhere, please queue up memories from Cats......

Hill's Rocked.
My favorite memory of Hill's was they always set up dioramas at the end of the aisles for Christmas. The closest one to us was like 45 minutes away, so it was a special treat for me and my cousin. The two that stick out in my head were The Empire Strikes Back dio of Hoth and the GI Joe dio with the first line of toys mocked up to look like the cover of the first comic book. In the Empire dio they had an AT-AT, AT-ST, snow speeder, and the Ice Playset, it was awesome. In the Joe dio, they had the MOBAT, the hardest toy to find that Christmas. My mom told me years later that she had a hard time finding the MOBAT. She knew it was what I wanted by how my eyes had lit up when I saw it in the diorama at Hill's. She said she had asked the manager about buying the MOBAT from the display. They had a policy that no one could buy from the display, it was part of sharing with other kids. I think that is cool, and something you wouldn't see at Wal-Mart now. (I did get my MOBAT for Christmas that year, she found it at a drug store, thank God for an awesome mom) |
