I am thoroughly convinced that they are very few original movies in existance anymore. Now, don't get wrong; I'm not against remakes or reboots of movies and franchises. Nor am against taking comic or toy properties and adapting them into film. Every filmmaker has an opportunity to introduce and put their own spin on an existing story. Sometimes it works out, other times it don't. Sometimes it's interesting to see how an older film is translated for a new generation. So, without further ado, I open the floor for anyone to offer their opinions about remakes/ reboots. Please articulate and offer examples of good and/ or bad. Also, this discussion goes for not only film, but television as well (i.e. Blade the series, V, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, etc.). Pass (The Flash, The New Adventures of Lois and Clark, etc.) and present.

I thought the new Taking of Pelham 123 was pretty damn good, I liked it. Ending was meh but it was still a great movie.
The 2010 remake of Karate Kid, however, pisses me off. No one replaces my Daniel-san. Not even Will Smith's untalented kid.

Pelham 123 was really good. However, I need to see the original. Cuz Denzel's character in the original was actually a cop. Plus, if you watch the featurettes on the remake, there was no HNT present during the exchange between the two lead characters.

But I don't think movies should be remade/rebooted. I think the original should be re-released in theaters and reappreciated. Just imagine if they put Krull in movie theaters? |

Remakes are just fine if done in a new and different way that works, or just simply updates for a more modern time.
Reboots work too.

The Halloween movies were also crap and I'm sure the new A NIghtmare on Elm Street will be just as pathetic. I actually like the Friday the 13th remake. Agreed about the originals just going back in the theaters, that would be awesome.

I don't think the originals should come back, some of 'em just wouldn't hold up under new eyes and with new technologies.
They belong to the time they came from. Very few films become timeless. We watch those movies and we see it thru the context of the time we first saw them, we're not comparing 'em to today's movies and technologies which would happen with new audiences that saw them in theatres.

When will hollywood come up with an original idea?
What next a "Star Wars: New Hope" reboot that is set in 1960s New York where Luke Skywalker is a some activist defense attorney, trying to bail out Hansen Solo and Lando Calrissian against Vader Industries? No light sabers. Just a bunch of law processes and stuff. |

There are some stories that I think should be preserved "as is" (or as close to it as possible) as the near-perfect works of art that they are, but they're very few and very far between. In fact, movie-wise the only ones I could think of off the top of my head would be:
The Godfather I and II Apocalypse Now Casablanca 2001: A Space Odyssey Raiders of the Lost Ark Jaws Rocky (The first one) Psycho (The Original) The Exorcist Now, that doesn't mean you can't riff on the movies in creative ways, but some things just shouldn't be messed with. Remastered and re-released? Go for it. Maybe a little added footage for a "director's cut?" I'm OK with that if the original Director is. But remaking/rebooting? Unnecessary. You're not likely to catch lightning in a bottle twice. |

Well they did bring back the Star Wars movies and they did very well. I can't remember if they added anything new but I think they were fairly in 'original' shape.
