I was a "surprise" child for my parents. So I had not only them, but 2 sisters that were about 10 years older than me. Dad was in the military and really wanted a boy. As long as it was manly, I had one, Joes, Star Wars, Bikes, quads you name it.
Funny thing is, in middle school I grew out my hair, pierced my ears and joined a metal band. God how my dad hated me back then We sit and reminisce about that over cold ones now, so it's all good.

At one point though my dad took me to what would eventually morph into Wizard World Philly back in 1993, I think just the Philidalphia Comic-con at the time. He admitted they he left with a new view of collecting after taking it all in and it was never too much of a problem after that. He too was glad that I had a hobby.
I am sure he would still frown on the money I spend, but Joes and comics are no where near my high ticket Oakley sunglass sunglass collection, which even that he never complains about. But I am over 30 now so he really can't. And I buy him glasses too!
He would never have a leg to stand on now anyways. Once the first Spider-Man movie hit he wents nuts collecting figures, statues and posters for "the children's operatory in his office."

When I was 13 I started collecting, truely collecting not just reading and discarding, comic books. My parents never really gave me shit about any of it through the years. Mostly because my comics were always well taken care of and stored away.
Now that I am 31, and there are probably 10 or 15 long boxes at my mom's house - she still doesn't give me any grief.
I think my parents got a little concerned when I turned our basement into a display room for over 120 12" G.I. Joe figures - all customed out into 10 man teams (per shelf). That might have been a little ridiculous.
But while not supportive - never discourgaging.

Did anyone ever save up those Bazooka Joe wrappers just to get some sort of prize? I saved up enough wrappers to get the small telescope and the damn neighbor's kid opened my mail and (I believe) STEPPED on my telescope! When I got home from school, he had the envelope opened and was like, "Here. This came for you."
I STILL hate the memory about any toy my uncle bought me during December would end up being some other kid's Christmas present and then that kid's parents gave us smelly sweaters in return! I somehow wish he bought me stuff that wasn't in a box (which was easy to repack and give away like "new"). Hence, the early part of my childhood, I didn't have any toys (unless you count the short time period before the toys got repacked and given away).

I was dirt poor, and negotiated the crap out of complex trades to work 2 for 3, and spin sales pitches to always trade up. Built complex economics and sales skills that benefited later in life.

I remember getting most of the Joes and Cobras around the third or fourth waves (Ripcord, Storm Shadow, Zartan, etc). I didn't have a single "big" vehicle but that led to far more realistic "spec ops" battles in room.
I also collected SW (A New Hope) figures, and to this day my dad rues that name "jawa" because I hunted for that figure for almost a year!
