My mom and dad owned a business during my "toy years" so we were the rich ones on our block. Still, my parents made me work at their video store for my Joes, WWF figures, Transformers, etc. It really taught me about money. I had to put up posters, sell ice cream, throw out the trash. Even now, I only buy one figure per pay check.
What I think was the more important thing about toy collecting, and one my parents never were ashamed of, what that it built our imagination's up at the same time. So many kids in my neighborhood were fighting, causing trouble, etc. I just wanted to have big ass battles with my Joes. It kept me young and even today when so many guys are so jaded by life kicking our ass, I find its more important now than ever to stay young. |

We had money, but not much. My dad bought me what he could. My collection wasn't huge, but I was happy with it. My dad loved GI Joe, and so do I. He got me an ammo box from the army surplus to keep Joes and weapons in. He also clipped and kept track of my file cards. Those were the good old days. Alot of things changed in our lives down the road, and I lost all that stuff. That's another story for another time....

I got alot of stuff from my parents. Unfortunately, I had self-esteem issues, and kids would jip me out of my stuff because I thought if I gave them my Joes they'd be my friends. I gave them my stuff and they still treated me like crap! Now that I'm an adult it really bugs me when I think about it.

Yes and no.
I was an only child and so I got a lot of stuff. However, my parents would have preferred I'd been interested in sports and other "normal" things. They despised my collecting as an adult and were embarrassed by it. I can remember having the "army-builder" argument with my mother over Vipers: "I am NOT buying you two of the same thing!" "But MOM, I NEED more than ONE Viper!!!" "I said no. Now get something else." "But MOM--" "Don't start with me or you get NOTHING." Fortunately she did not know one action figure from the other so I was able to gather five Vipers in time but I had to get them one at a time. Perseverance is the path to achievement.

I had NO toys until I started saving up my lunch money (only 5 cents a day). The rest of the money, I usually picked up change from the floor (school kids usually drop dimes and pennies on the floor). I saved up enough to buy Storm Shadow figure, Snake Eyes, Beach Head, Quick Kick, and Shipwreck. Destro was a trade and Cobra Commander was a Hasbro mail order.
When I started saving up for a Voltron (about $39.99 on sale), my mother took the money I saved up and used it towards my ungrateful older brother's college funds (when it came time for me to go to college, I had to get a job!). I still hate the rich kid (who stole my Firefly) who's parents bought him a USS Flagg!

I grew up in a very small town, and so after 6th grade I had to keep my interest in Joes quiet, otherwise it would have been one more thing for my peers to tease me about. I did have a couple of good friends who collected, and when we hung out we would play with our Joes and go hunting for them. My dad wasn't too thrilled about my collecting, but he doesn't bug me about it now.

I caught hell as I got older and was still "playing with dolls".
They stopped when my girl friend (now wife) started sleeping over. I think most dads get concerned, not about orientation, but can my boy be a man, get a partner, pay bills when he still wants to buy toys. |

Most of my collection as a kid came from yard sales and flea markets.
