O.k. so it's my understanding that when you list items on ebay using the auction style format the Final Value Fees are structured as:
8.75% of the first $25.00 of the closing price+ 3.5% of the remaining amount over $25.00 I just had auctions close for four guitars that I sold and here is a breakdown of the closing price and the FVF that I was charged. GTR1: $700.05 FVF:$19.99 GTR2: $105.00 FVF:$9.19 GTR3: $179.57 FVF:$15.71 GTR4: $280.00 FVF:$19.99 Maybe I've missed something in the small print, but if you do the math on this the Final Value Fees should be about 20 dollars less than what was charged. I mean I have no idea how that the Final Value Fee's for a $700.00 sale and a $280.00 are the exact same amount. I did read something about 'variations' in listings having a different fee structure, but apparently that only applies to the Clothing/shoes and home/garden categories. If anyone knows what's going on or can help me out I would really appreciate it. |

I knew I wasn't going to sleep until I figured this out. So I went on ebay's live help chat and this is what I found out:
ebay now offers 5 free insertion fees per 30-day period for auction style listings. These 5 free insertion fees are applied to your first 5 auctions of the 30 day period. That sounds pretty good, I mean it could save you some $$$ if you start your listing at a higher dollar amt. I usually start my listing at $.99 so my insertion fee's are never more than a dime or fifteen cents (plus additional pics if I need to use them.) The thing that I didn't realize is that in exchange for the free listing fee you have to pay a flat 8.75% of the closing cost or $19.99 whichever is less. So basically I saved a dime up front, but got knocked out of paying 3.5% of the remaining balance in some high dollar items. So really, their 5 free insertions fees doesn't help at all. I asked if there was a way to opt out and was told that you have to use turbo lister or something like that to opt out. The person I chatted with also told me that you could list your 5 free items and then immediately end the listing and do another listing. I thought that was sorta odd for someone from ebay to tell me to do something like that. |

Don't trust ebay, don't trust paypal. They are the devil. I have a strong bias, but I won my case in small claims court....well the settled but I call that a win in my book. But the shady things that they slip in on people are just crazy. Paypal also operates with about $30 million in frozen accounts daily.
I had my bad experience with them, I'm never using them again, and wouldn't recomend anybody else to either. I had a huge rating, never had any problems with other people, I just got screwed over by paypal and ebay, that's the sad part. |

I've read the paypal user agreement and I wonder how it's legal for them to do what they do and not get in trouble for it. I mean if I read it right they can basically freeze your account for any reason and you'll never see a penny of the money again. |

You can always arrange for your own credit card processing service to avoid using paypal. You can then cut the ebay owned paypal out. However, ebay is another story. Basically, they've got a monopoly in the online auction space. It's a bit of a catch 22. You could try to get the government to prevent them from being a monopoly, but then they'd want to start taxing the profits people make. It's just something you've got to live with if you want to get higher prices for your items with their large pool of users.
