This is completely apples and oranges. I started on bass then bought a guitar and now play both. I ended up lead vocals in my band but thats another story. I think getting into a band? Yes..you'll find dudes to jam with if your playing bass. Being in a band and playing bass is much harder to "shine" though.
As far as whats easier...apples and oranges, if your generally playing Misfits songs on the guitar, pretty easy. If your playing Primus, Cryptopsy or Jaco Pastorious on the bass...very hard...and vice versa. After awhile I noticed a 4 string Ibanez just felt better in my hands, I generally play with my fingers...unless I'm doing some grind stuff, which is basically "controlled noise" I use a Boss Overdrive pedal thats heavy on the saturation and play with a pick. When I need to show something to my guitarist..I generally work something out on my Jackson and just put it into power and bar chords..then he works out the intricacies. I use a small 25 watt amp and a Metal Zone pedal...for what I'm doing, its fine. For what he's doing...both he and my bass player have pretty sick cabneits. Either way you go, I think if you really REALLY get into it at some point you'll pick up another instrument...I think playing bass helped me understand the guitar better and vice versa. Being a little capable on both instruments definately helps me explain things and communicate to my other band members. If someone told me right now, I could only jam on 1 instrument for the rest of my life? I'd probably take the bass...learning the bass lead on Number Of The Beast or Hammer Smashed Face alone makes it well worth it!! |

When you strip a song down to bare bass, if it sucks, then the whole song sucks because then that's all you'll hear in the background every time you hear the song. It's surprisingly easy to ignore a guitar, but hard to ignore crappy bass because people like turning up the bass on their systems.

I play keyboard. But I remember bass was pretty boring. I wish I had picked up guitar.

It sounds like a profound question, but they're both the same. You have to know where any pic'd chord lies in relation to the sound you're trying to make. Basically it all depends on who's playing it. |

I play both badly, but I think guitar is a little tougher to learn right.

I like the guitar. I don't think I have enough musical talent to play bass. I can't seem to hear the bass too much, I focus on the leads and melodies. I also like the gear you can get with the guitar. I know pedals are available for the bass, but it seems like there is so much more stuff for the guitar that's fun to play with. I actually have a pretty nice set-up. Can't play too much right now, though, with a broken left middle finger.

Bass is my favorite to play but must admit guitar was harder to learn ( still can't really play crap). I use to run an old fender bass through an ancient Vox guitar amp. Once the tubes heated up it smoked but sounded awesome .
