Quick question for any diesel owners out there. My father-in-law recently began plugging his Dodge truck into an outlet in my garage and leaving it sit like that whenever he's not out driving. I've checked all over the internet to find out what he's doing, but can't seem to get an answer (something to do with diesel fuel #2 freezing I believe) So the mechanically inclined of Hisstank are my last option. My main concern is if plugging his truck in all day/night is going to hit me up with a huge electric bill or not. If it's costing me money I plan on unplugging it, if it's nothing more than a couple bucks a month higher bill I'm fine with it and will get off his back. Would be much appreciated if anyone can answer that before the next bill cycle

sounds like an electric car. most diesels use glow plugs instead of spark plugs but I've never seen one that requires being plugged in.

I believe they have " glow Plugs" that keep the oil in the engine when sitting from freezing up, as for your electric bill it shouldn't cost more than a few dollars I have huge fishtanks and uh, how do you say hydroponics tomatoes going in the house all year and they hardly use any electricity.

Most likely he's plugging in a block heater. My Dad owned both a diesel Suburban and Expedition, and he plugged the block heaters in overnight. Diesel is VERY sluggish in cold weather compared to gasoline and keeping a block heater going helps you turn it over in the morning. However I dont see the point of keeping it plugged in all day...overnight should be fine as long as he runs it during the day.

Awesome. thanks guys. Sounds like 'block heater' is the answer. Doesn't look like it's costing much for him to leave it plugged in all the time if there is an automatic sensor on it anyways. That's one thing I can scratch off the "Why i hate my in-laws living in my house" list Now if someone can do something about the 3 dogs they keep sneaking into the downstairs guest room all the time...

Yup, engine block heater. My old VW diesel rabbit had that. Never used it though. I miss that car, $5.00 in gas and I could drive all week long. That was when diesel was .99 cents a gallon. Now I feel old.

Block heater. Used to have one in my 82 Olds Delta. The car was very hard to start below 20 degrees without it.

like has been said its probably a block heater. glow plugs are for igniting the fuel mix to start the engine after that its done by the heat and compression of the cylinder.
