I usually lie to strangers and people I meet at first.
(^^^^All of this is a lie.)

I am going to be totally honest here, I spent 18yrs on the road traveling from one town to another. I made 1056 stops along the way. I drank, dated several girls, had 4 ex wives, 3 cars that broke down on me, lost several friends, and did things that are not appropriate to put on here looking for happiness. I stared re collecting again, doing what I wanted "the nerdy thing" and I have not been as happy as I am now. So what I am 35 yrs old and go toy shopping every single day. I can tell you how to get from a Toys R US in Yonkers, New York to one in New Orleans, and I am proud that it don't fit into what is "normal". Besides at the end of the day a GI Joe is way safer and cheaper than a 8 ball. So I don't justify myself to any one. And fellow tankers you should not either. We love it & it makes us happy!

Toys are not my path to happiness. I feel like I'm constantly being watched by thousands of tiny plastic eyes, and some of them have guns.

Well to be honest I always looked at 30 as the age I'd give it up. Today is my 30th birthday and guess what? I don't feel like it! I love it and I have a girlfriend of almost 11 years that doesn't have a problem with it. As long as bills are paid before my plastic crack dealers are, she's fine. Every once in awhile I may get a look or fell guilty for buying something but another trip to Walmart or TRU usually fixes that.
Besides, like mentioned above, I could be spending that money on something WAY worst that some toys. Last edited by Screamer52488; 12-07-2009 at 01:03 PM.. |

I have come to terms with my hobby and never plan on ever changing as collecting is a part of who I am. I will admit that I have gone in and out of phases of collecting but I eventually always come back. I used to be a huge comic and card collector but eventually gave that up. I still read TPBs and the like but I just don't buy dozens of issues each month. Collecting figures is a different story and although I was a huge SW toy collector in the late 90's/early 2000's, I grew disenchanted with it which filtered into other lines I collected. Couple that with life changes and I was out of the scene for awhile. With the number of awesome figures from a variety of sources, it was hard for me to walk into a store and walk out with nothing. Then I discovered the 25th line which brought me a nostalgic feeling and right back into the thick of things. I even have jumped in on other lines like MOTUC, DC Classics, Marvel Legends/Universe and TF.
With all that being said, anyone who really knows me understands that collecting is part of who I am. Sure, it has conflicted with certain relationships. My current gf thinks its immature and I should be focusing on more important things but she reluctantly accepts it as I accept certain traits of hers. When I was a bit younger, all my ex gfs accepted it and I even had a few go on hunts with me. I am proud of my collection and it brings a certain peace and joy to me that in the long run, I really don't care what anyone else thinks. |

Reading some of the stories of tankers childhood years i feel realy lucky. My dad is now 72 and has always been an massive fan of Sgt Rock ( he still has almost every issue going back to the early 50's) comics in general and militaria collecting. As i grew up he'd buy me all the military toys there were so he could play with them as well. So he supported and understood me when i never stopped collecting when most of my friends did, i'm now 37 yrs old and he is still interested in what i buy and he still reads my lees action figure review and collects 1/6 figures.
So mainly due to him, no i don't feel guilty or the need to quit. I work, take care of the bills first and the toys i buy still give me lots of enjoyment. My girlfriend collects Stephen King 1st prints and loves sci-fi and fantasy, so she understands me. Her only concern sometimes is the amount of stuff i have. So my advice would be, take care of the bills first and if toys still give you enjoyment, then don't ever stop till they don't! One thing that makes me laugh is when i bump into someone i knew from my teenage years that i haven't seen since then. I was always known as the guy that had an massive toy collection. When i was between 16-25 there were a lot of people that just didn't understand it. Now when i see them the first thing they say is... "Do you still collect toys?" "Yes" "Do you still have all the old ones in the Boxes?" "Yes" "I saw that stuff on TV, some of it is worth serious money now isn't it?" "Yeah!" Then i look at their sad faces when they tell me they had it all and either threw it away, destroyed it or sold it for near nothing because they felt to old to be playing with toys!
