Thanks for the encouragement everyone... maybe we should wrap this into an unofficial HissTank challenge. Form support groups, exchange recipes, and so on... heck, I can't be the only one that wants to break the chains...

i take care of myself and occasionaly eat out(hehe). but im not going to give it up completely. just eat it in moderation. it has been proven that if you try to stop altogether cold turkey, you increase the chance of making things worse if you do not go through with it or cave in.

I say go for. You will be doing a huge favor for your wallet and health. I've been packing a lunch(sandwich, fruit, and snack) everyday for the last 2 yrs, and I can tell you that it has help me in a big way on my budget and weight. If you have time in your schedule, throw in some cardio workout and drink lots and lots of water everyday. These 2 things alone can make you feel great about yourself. so good luck to you and wife!

I will never give up on eating out. My gf is asian and makes asian food almost every day. I just can't eat asian food more then 1 or 2 times a week. I don't really know how to cook, so I eat out alot.

I avoid chain restaurants like the plague. Yes, admittedly I have cravings for McDonalds or something once in a while, but my girlfriend and I prefer to spend our money at family owned restaurants.
1) The food is healthier.
2) The owners actually care about what you think of their business.
3) Income is going to a family that's just trying to make it in this world, rather than a large corporation (I realize technically money spent at a chain restaurant will find its way to their working staff, but I digress.)
Ultimately, eating at home is the cheapest and healthiest way, but if you're going out, supporting your locally owned and run businesses is a good thing.
Even when we grocery shop, we try to buy local. There is a delivery service we deal with where every week we make our order online, and they deliver it to our doorstep every Wednesday. We can get everything we want basically. Little more expensive, but we know where our food came from. Everything that can be ordered from their website is listed with where it came from, and how far. We try to keep it as local as possible, that way the farmers and local entrepreneurs get the income. Just another way for us to help our community out. If you have something like this in your community, I urge you to seek it out.
