Okay. So I'm looking for a digital camera, and I am awful when it comes to electronics. What do you have? Do you love it? Best Brand? Canon or Nikon? Thoughts and suggestions?
I will say I do NOT want a Vivitar, I got one on Black Friday, the pictures came out awful, and to hold it it felt like one of those cheap plastic cameras you used to be able to pick up for $5 bucks for kids that took the 300 film that looked like binoculars. It went back the next day. Eesh. This is what I am leaning towards at the moment . Walmart.com: Canon PowerShot A1100-IS Pink 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom, Optical Image Stabilizer: Digital Cameras But as with computers, I dont know whats good, whats bad, and what alot of the numbers mean. lol Any help is appreciated

This is what I use:
Nikon E5700 I inherited from my dad... it's got 8x zoom 5 megapixel capability The ability to set the F-stop (which allows me to compensate better for low-light conditions without a flash) Auto focus Macro function (essential when shooting closeup to small objects like Joes) -- check for the little flower icon on the LCD Flash included -- and can you turn it off, adjust it for red eye, etc Some image stabilization is also good (if your hand shakes a lot) This camera's big though... it's not the one I bring on trips and family outings and such. |

Both my point and shoot and SLR are Canons. They have never done my wrong. I would suggest this camera over the one you are looking at.
Canon - PowerShot 10.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera - Pink - SD1200 IS It is $20 more, but it comes with a rechargable lithium battery pack. You will make your money back quickly on the amount of double A's you will burn through. The camera you posted above has the ability to use a battery pack, but without looking it up I would say it costs close to $40. It is 10.0 MP vs the 12.1, but in the point and shoot world you can't tell the difference. Most all of the other features are the same if not better, it is much smaller and it is still pink. I wouldn't go over 4 gigs for the SD card, but buy one that has a fast transfer rate such as this. It will determine how fast you can take pictures. I actually recommend (2) 2 gig cards (may take some searching) over a 4 gig, because they can fail. Also 4 gigs of pictures to scroll through takes for ever if you are trying to show a pic to friend. SanDisk - Ultra 4GB Secure Digital High Capacity Memory Card - SDSDRH-4096-A11 I use the Ultra II in all my camera's. Probably will step it up next round when I upgrade my SLR body, but anyway hope this helps...

i just picked up a nikon 10 megapixel from best buy on black friday for 119.00 and its smaller then my cell phone and well you have seen my recent pics superb photos a worthy investment the previous camera my moms was a four megapixel cannon and is huge!! ok pics but couldnt do real close up shots
so go either nikon or cannon avoid the others cause sony's you have to use sonys acc. like sd cards and such so you spend extra on more stuff anyways good luck finding one

I was looking at the ELPH too, It came recommended at best buy, and most places have it on sale fo $50 dollars off right about now. The 2 reasons I was leaning towards the other were, because I believe it has a higher zoom lens. I think it has a 4 and the ELPH has a 3? and someone told me that a higher zoom lens ability was better than digital zoom. but I dont know if the quality is different between a zoom lense and a digital zoom, because their both zooming in. The battery pack is what I'm waffling on between the two the most if I go for one of the Canons. A Rechargable lithium is awesome, but I'm really spontaneous and pick and go, and I figure I could get rechargable batteries, and keep some charged, but like if I'm out for awhile and my batteries die and I dont have a charger, I can always pick up some more batteries at a gas station at 3 am. (it makes sense in my head) Because I know that I can kill a cell phone battery with a nights use, and those are lithium batteries i think? though I don't know if the battery life is the same on those. But theoretically, Could I buy a 2nd lithium battery and a charger for the battery so I could keep an extra charged? Butterflyphoto.com has a bundle on sale that has the Pink cam, a case, a SD card, a set of rechargeable batteries, and the rechargeable battery charger thingie for about $150 (which is what the camera sells for everywhere else anyway when its not on sale). My only issue with Butterflyphoto is that Ive never heard of them before today, so I dont know if anyone has had issues with them. I know theres alot of joe toy sites that people have had good and bad experiences with and cameras are undoubtebly the same. Anyone ever used butterflyphoto? But I like the idea of Walmart, because from what I remember Walmart electronics have a year warranty from walmart dont they? And thank you for the info on the SD card, That is actually the one I picked up on black friday on sale. I'm so glad I didnt return it with the Vivitar. I figured I got a really good deal on it and I would need it with any other camera anyway. LOL I know Ive got my pink reputation, but the color doesnt have to be pink, I just have a friend that has the canon I mentioned, and hers is gray and I dont want ours to ever get mixed up if I get this one (its someone I am around alot, and we had the same phone at some point in time and went home with each others phones on accident) I also keep going back to looking at the Nikon CoolPix, but I think that has to do with the mass advertising by Ashton Kutcher making it look so easy to use. The touch screen feature is cool, but touch screen stuff seems so fragile.

Char,
To shed a little more light... The lithium pack in my my point and shoot, I didn't charge for the first four months after I got it. It wasn't until it started shooting slow pictures that I realized it was the battery. If you put it on the charger once a week/month, you'll be fine. And yes, you can buy a second battery on Amazon. The battery comes out of the camera to charge so you will not need an additional charger. Make sure it is Canon brand as the others never last as long as the OEM. I tend to stay away from online photo shops, you can get the same deals in the store for the most part and have a brick and mortar place to take it back to if something goes wrong. Online photo shops also tend to deal with "Gray Market" equipment. My SLR is an example of this. It is technically an xTi, but it is the Japanese version, called the Kiss. I thought i was buying an xTi, I wanted to return it, but there was so much legalese in the fine print that I should have just gone to Best Buy. What's the difference in the two cameras? None functionally, but any warranty would have to be sent to JApan, not a shop in the US. Very inconvenient, but knock on wood I have never had a problem with it. Hope this helps, I am by no means a pro. I just did a lot of research when I bought my point and shoot, then got scammed a little when I got my SLR. Both good learning experiences, both cameras work great. My point and shoot is only 7.1 MP, but I have no great need to update anytime soon, I want to say it is four years old. Loc

I didn't address your zoom question... I don't think you will notice it once you start using it. Unless you are going to be taking pictures of sweeping vistas or going to a ton of pro-sports games, you don't need that much zoom.
I am thinking you will be using it for going out with friends, maybe some of your custom work and so on. If that's the case you will rarely need to zoom that far in.

Here's my camera: Fujifilm Finepix A820 The only problems I have with it is I had to go to ebay to get an AC Adapter (I knew most of my pictures would be indoors so I figured why waste money on batteries) and you have to hold the shutter button down halfway to allow it to focus, then take the picture (You can just press the button, but it doesn't always focus in time)
My wife has a Powershot and it seems to work fine |
