I'm a mechanic by nature but with the economy...you know the rest. I'm thinking of taking the time off to go back to school. Getting an A+ seemed smart because it doesnt seem to take that long, I'll learn more then I know and it wont tie me up in school for a crazy period of time incase I get my job back.
So..for a guy smart enough to use his computer and switch parts on dump trucks, how do hard do you rate the course and test?
Also..I understand this is like the 1st step in computers, but would it be possible to just get a job with just the A+..and if not what is the next class to take from there.
Thanks in advance!

I took mine in 97(now outdated)...wasnt too hard at all. I cant imagine what the new test is like now. But ,some simple studing and some hands on should get you through it.
oh and after that get your network + certification. Then depending on what direction you go,your continue training. You could get CISCO certified, but i heard that is a hard test. An A+ will get you in the door, but the more expierience you get ,the better. And there's various Microsoft certs. you can get also.

The thing about working in IT in general is you have to keep up with relatively rapid changes in technology and practice. If you don't have an inherent interest in working on computer hardware, you might find it difficult to sustain the effort in constantly educating yourself. Of course, if you're into computers as a hobby, it doesn't feel like "educating" yourself, but more like keeping up with your inclinations. Still, I know two A+ certified guys who got certified something like 6 years ago, but now work as cable installers because they weren't really tech-heads (they basically took A+ because it was sort of the "hot" thing back then) and just
didn't feel like maintaining careers in a subject area they had no inherent interest in.

the course was revamped in 07 and combined both hardware and software into one course and added an additional module for "professional communication" which is a PC term for "knowing how to talk to clients that have little or no knowledge of computers"
In answer to your question: no it is not a difficult at all and depending on how you study (using practice tests and simulators is a huge help) will depend on how easy the test is.
As far as getting a job with just an A+...depending on your local market a strong maybe.
As far as the "next step" it really depends on what direction you want your career to go in. In many circles A+ is referred to as the "gateway cert"
Some would suggest a microsoft track...however nearly all would suggest a cisco track.
If you were looking at the rest of the CompTIA courses i would suggest Net+ or Sec+.
Personally I went A+, Net+, Server+ , CCENT, CCNA, MCSE, Sec+, CCNE, CEH and am working towards my LPT
For me I had to answer the question "where do i want to end up" and then worked backwards discovering what certs would get me there.
